Iβve used 3 mile manual splits for marathons lately. Like WW my starting idea was just to relax about getting it bang on every mile and assuming that various minor inclines would even out a bit. I then switch to smaller splits towards the end when I need more precise numbers to stick to - when it becomes work rather than pacing. Now for a 10k I split something like 1k, 3k, 5k, 7k and 9k depending how itβs going and which markers I miss. |

Yes, see you in Chicago @Mark J π³πΏ! On the pacing, I'm a firm km/split user, having originally started out using mile kms. I like the frequency of the feedback for kms, and while that means you get more fluctuation in splits from course variations, as long as you take that into account and are relaxed about it its fine. So if I was going for 4.15/km pace, I would give myself a window of 4.10-4.20 and treat all of them as if they were 4.15s (and feel a bit good if they are <4.15). |

I use km splits on my watch to gauge my current pace. More reliable is a wrist band with 5k splits. |

I use km's for everything, maybe because I started running I did parkruns and 10ks. It's only when I meet other runners that I have to do sums, certainly takes your mind off the pain of running 3'44 min/km π 4'15 min/km your running sub3, 4'16 your not |

BTW that moment when someone says, if you'd have ran 1 sec per km you would have broke 3.π It happens

I do all my running in miles and the only translation I can immediately undertake is 6.26mm is 4.00 m/km. Re gauging your mara, whilst I have my watch set to 1m auto lap I gauge my performance on the 5k split time, which is nice and easy in major marathons. When I look at what time I'm after I look at what the 5k splits are for that pace. Taking it all mile by mile can lead to a bit of panic if 1m is too slow or fast, over 5k it evens itself out a bit. I remember the time I ran through the previous 5k marker then deduct from time I'm at next marker. Becomes increasingly difficult to perform such basic calculations however as the race goes on! |

Interesting.......I very much dont focus on split times, just keep an eye on elapsed time. I'm more interested in relaxing and getting as far as possible for the least energy/stress as possible......it's an effort thing for me, and ramps up later if i can push on a bit. Then review where i am and push on a bit more as and when.....for me the watch records the time, it doesn't set the pace.

Over time I moved to the same approach TR, focusing on feeling and saving energy. I look at the mile splits but rarely react or make big adjustments, saveit for the big push at the later stages.
