Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Chris, Some European marathons can be cheap, but Berlin was pricey when I did it (although cheaper than Boston and Chicago!!). I think I paid about £30 for things like Malta and Sofia when I did them. From memory I think Seville was about £80 but I got that off a transfer list, which added expense.

Vienna wasn’t ruinous or I wouldn’t have done it. Can’t see price as it’s coming up and closed for entries.

Sub 3 probably way further away than I thought. And I have been so careful in my expectations, so if I thought I might be in the right ball park already in May. I might have to reconsider, and think about an other target than 4:14 average :)

Coming from Belgium, I can say that some bigger marathons here (Ghent, Bruges) charge about 80 euro's.
The Flanders Fields Marathon (finish in Ypres) usually has some British runners and costs less than 40 euro's. Inscriptions for this year haven't started yet by the way.

Bowman - that race sounds like complete chaos! That in itself is enough to throw the outcome, but given you felt flat coming into it off of a mini taper - even less representative of what you can do off a proper rest and when your head is in the right place.

Anything else coming up which gives you a way to evaluate? Any local parkrun equivalent?

WW - yup planning on dusting off the orange vest fairly soon. Finally starting to feel like a runner again and willing to put on the race kit of old!

Charles, I did Bruges for my 50th marathon and loved it - it’s a place I’ve been many times and I love it around there anyway. I know not Belgium, but I’ve done Rotterdam and Leiden in NL and I think from memory Leiden in particular was affordable, even though I entered late as it was a last minute thing that we were in the area. I’m not one to especially care about medals, but I think of the marathons I’ve done, Leiden’s was my favourite! French ones can have the added expense of needing a medical certificate, and some GPs can charge a lot for this, although there are ways around it with templates available online. I know a few runners who run marathons regularly and they avoid French races for this reason though, and I’ve only done one (Nice-Cannes), which I went to with my club.

A decent day out for me at Manchester, really enjoyed the run. 2:52:48 isn’t a super time but a solid wava PB and it all felt pretty strong up to the last few km when I didn’t really have the motivation to push hard and perhaps gave up a minute too easily.

Course also measured very long for me which I was aware of en route but it was a bit demotivating when it got to the painful bit.

Thanks for the shout WW! I worked out who it was just too late to respond…

Miser, yes it throw me off a bit for sure, my mind wasn’t all with me perhaps. there’s always an excuse, but in the end it probably wasn’t my day either :)
Due to the problems with the event, they invited everyone to a virtual do over in a couple of weeks, maybe I’ll do that one. Only if I feel up for a hard session so it won’t mess up my last marathon training and tapering.
I have 4 weeks to my main event this spring, CPH marathon. I probably rethink sub 3h and go for a sensible goal, and if I do, my autumn race will have to be a sub 3h try. I’m so close now.
:)
