Hi JDA, I'm Still trying to make sense of Sunday. Missed my main objectives, found it very tough but still kind of enjoyed it, though I wanted it over as soon as possible. Training volume had been higher than ever and at good pace, so I harboured secret hopes of 2:50. Plan was to start that way at least, though as it turned out I started with Lee78 and was happy to be running 2:55 through 5 and knew any faster wasn't going to happen that day. It got tough for me between 15 and 18, to the extent that I wanted to stop in the shade and quiet of a tunnel in Canary Wharf but that would've been too easy. But from 18 I realised I was still going, and actually slowing less than others around me, so psychologically I got a boost even though I felt rotten. Then it was a case of just getting to the end, knowing that if I kept moving I could still break 3. So pleased I carried on and did that, more pleased I made the top 1000 as thought that would only come with a 2:50, but frustrated at not being able to get, or even really attempt to go for the time. It has made me realise I should race more than 2 or 3 times a year though as up to now have been happy enough training. Early days but thinking a June or Autumn marathon might be required.

I've just blogged my race. (n.b. it's my first one, pretty long and as much for me as anyone else).

Batmansdad - You looked strong the time I ran with you! From the moment we set off the initial pace felt hard whereas the same pace felt easy at the start of Abingdon last year. When you went ahead I felt it would be a big risk going with you!
Looking back you start to notice lots of little things that may have had an impact, my gel belt being to loose and constantly trying to adjust it got frustrating, missing the first 2 mist showers, loosing a gel and getting a Lucozade snatched from me at the last hand held out! You did well to stay under 3 and can be happy in the knowledge that along with Chris, you came out of the day with far less wounds (physical and mental) than the rest of us! 👍🏻

+1 what lee said. Sounds like you coped pretty well with a very tough day.
I did also have half an eye on a 2nd bite at the cherry (maybe Edinburgh or an autumn race) if I'd been within a gnat's crotchet of 2:45, but that never really got on the agenda for me on race day despite the perfect conditions. I do plan to keep running a bit more over the summer though compared to last year which was very slack (about 100km/month from May through August). Already got a handful of races pencilled in to keep things interesting.

Batman’s dad- Must have been that shortcut we took after London Bridge that helped 😁
Looking on run Britain vlm had an SSS of 3.1 this year. I think that means it was tough and That’s the highest of any of my runs.

Chris, it was only 3 sss on mine !!! I had a couple slightly higher and also one way out at an sss of 6, which was my pep half effectively on a skating rink
Positive negotiations have been opened with the better half on Dublin in October.

Wow that’s a big score for a flat world-class marathon. My local hilly/muddy parkruns are usually lower than that!
