My thoughts are that 12 mins is a huge huge PB and not remotely achievable unless your previous one was really a bit of a disaster or there has been something completely revolutionary in your training. I have to say it doesn’t sound like either of these have been the case. I’ve found 3 mins each year with a good step up in training and an additional year of experience. You are very confident you are faster, that’s fair enough and suggests that the 3:05-8 range is very reasonable. Which end of that depends on a bit more detail than we have. There’s quite a big difference between them! |

I did the Brass Monkey Half in 1:32 ish, but had a shocker in the last few km. I came down with a bad cold afterwords, which partially explains the performance. My longest run at that stage of things was about 14 miles or so, so when I tried to race 13.2 I was short of endurance. Marathon PB was very easy. Pacing was even, and in retrospect I should have gone faster. But when you get near the end you can’t fix that. |

I’m with jda I think. Better to do a 3.05 than go for sub 3 and blow up. Went on the scales today and still haven’t managed to put much weight back on. Just hoping I have the reserves to get me through 26 miles |

I'm also with Chris and jda - I'd recommend targeting 3:05 icenutter, although obviously you know yourself better than anyone. I'd be a bit worried about your relative paucity of long runs (e.g. you've listed 3runs at 18 miles or more, by comparison I've done 11 of >18miles since the start of the year) which just increases the risk of blowing up if you go off too fast. Chris - take the positive from it and consider it racing weight! I've gained a little in the last week or so but that's fine. Last night's second helping of crumble and custard was thoroughly enjoyed |

I got a 15 minute PB from 3:13 at Abingdon in 2015 to 2:58 in London six months later. Like I said earlier, it was down to taking the big mileage plunge and my body responding very positively to it.

Well that would certainly point more towards the 3:05 end of things. Sub 3 is quite a challenge though, there are plenty here who have a string of 1:25ish halves (even perhaps sub-1:24) who haven't quite managed. If 3:05 proves to be ridiculously easy a negative split will get you to about 3:03 and then it's not really a long wait to the autumn season (or even a late entry to Edinburgh). |

Your HR is going to drift quite quickly I'd say icenutter as you don't look to have the miles in your legs. I went from 3.13 to 2.57 but that was off the back of increased mileage. I'd say go for 3.05. If you've been eating well for the last couple of days Chris you'll be fine. Keep topped up tomorrow and Saturday and you'll have plenty in the tank. |

Just in case anyone isn't aware there's a planned strike on the DLR which might affect getting to the expo tfl.gov.uk |

Had my last proper run/race kit test before London in the heat today. Aim was to benchmark pace at marathon HR (142-143 bpm), and to say it went badly would be an understatement. Paces went down from an opening 6:36 per mile to 6:41, then 6:51. HR average wasn't even in the right ballpark, raising from 146 average to 151 average. My intention was to run all miles at about 142-143 bpm, which is where I think it'll be around miles 10-13, but to do that I'd have been looking at 7m/miling (at least). Few things I learnt: a) I was using a new HR strap, and not sure if the readings were 100% accurate (it was a cheap strap from amazon with good reviews), the last mile it went haywire - going back to original Garmin for the marathon, even if it is a big tatty it will last another 26 miles. b) I'm not going to wear a cap in the marathon, I don't like the feel of running with it, there are water stops most miles so I will just douse myself more offen. c) the forecast for London is looking a bit better (today at least), and guess I should be glad of getting a run in that'll be hotter and worse conditions than on Saturday. All in all not a great run, but I guess that is the purpose of these last week kit tests, still no idea of what time to shoot for on Sunday but hope it goes better than today! |
