Thanks for all the opinions everybody. Just hearing a different point of view is worthwhile.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
Icenutter - what target is actually meaningful to you? If it's warm be a bit conservative, but no point pacing nicely and then being disappointed by the time (like your current PB if I read it right). Mark - welcome. Like LMH I am another advocate of decent mileage, with mainly easy miles. But while I could run sub-3 for every age from 43-48 I have missed the target in a couple of tries post 50. So some hard work is recommended too! For all these questions on target pace, I would answer (not very helpfully for Sunday) practice running to effort (specifically breathing). Copes with varying conditions and health on the day, not prone to the failures of HR monitoring, takes your mind off the miles. Practice at halfs, apply to a marathon with a slightly slower breathing rate until half way. |

I wonder whether running to effort is feasible for a marathon. The first half has always felt ridiculously easy for me except perhaps for the two worst efforts where I went off rather too hard. Even they were easy for 10 miles or more! I always breathe 2-2 for all running, have done it right from when I first read it in JD. Except for towards the end of shorter races/intervals when I can't I don't think I got to 2-1 at Mancs recently. |

I ran to effort for London a couple of years back. I knew I'd shatter my PB with a well run race and if sub 3 was the outcome, bonus. I was in unknown territory and went along with the ride.

It’s possible but if well trained and tapered it’s very hard to run to effort.

I breathe 2-2 for runs involving any sort of effort. Thought it was guff, tried it and it really helps when the going gets tough. Feeling pangs of envy but this morning's run makes me realise that sitting in front of the TV on Sunday morning is the right place to be! |

Number Collected. Last Run tomorrow. Hydration (Nuun always) - Tick. Carbs - tick. Feel pretty well rested despite usual taper twinges and paranoia. At this point no intention to change my target. As long as it is mostly overcast and still mostly in the teens and not twenties think the weather should be fine. Bit of a breeze should help as well. However I am thinking a bit about adjusting tactics slightly. Was planning to try and run even splits, but since it is warm I think I will try and go through the first half 1:28:30 ish and see what happens from there. Feel confident in my training and in better shape than I have ever got to the start line - just older...... Good luck to everyone. Hope you hit your goals. Believe in your training and relax! |
