Have you got other cardiovascular risk factors that mean your cholesterol needs to be chased down below 5, Mrs Jigs? Or a high QRISK2 score? (You don't need to tell me, I'm just indulging in physicianly nosiness and statins are generally very safe and well tolerated.)

Mrs Jigs (Luverlylegs)
Family history of heart issues Velociraptor, the athletes cardiac study showed 25% build up in an artery, 2 sisters and a brother already have stents, granted my lifestyle and fitness is different to theirs, father had angina and died of a heart attack at 68. The consultant carrying out the study strongly recommended statins but I am reluctant.

Sounds like a reasonable recommendation, Mrs J. I've had a few patients who haven't managed to run away from that sort of family history, and it's something that none of the risk calculators is all that good at taking into account.

We all have to make our own decision based on the evidence we have. I expect to start taking a statin at some point in the future if I live long enough.

I fear if I got everything properly checked I would be in a similar position, Mrs. J. Dad had fatal heart attack at 47, his parents similar... Mum lived to 92 or 3 though.

When I visited the doctors for the first time in about ten years for something unrelated (Sir Blobbins - V-rap may remember) my blood pressure was recorded as high. I had to go back and have it taken again but the nurse was very vague about the results. So I don't know! I did try and cut down on coffee. For a day or two.
