Nothing would persuade me to pour my calories down my throat in liquid form unless I had extensive dental work or took up triathlon.

I tried gels when I thought I might run a marathon and they are pretty vile. I now cycle far more than run and generally factor in cake or pub stops. I do put zero calorie electrolyte tab in water bottle when it’s hot though. I have no idea whether it helps but it stops daughters nagging but I have seen that I do tend to drink more of it than if it’s just plain water. There’s often articles in the cycling and running magazines. Our library has the back issues of some of them on an app which can be worth flicking through to learn more in a not too scholarly way. |

This could be a very interesing thread ![]() Protein shakes - I’ve had free samples of the “milky” ones and hate them - but the fruity “whey isolate” clear versions - (MyProtein do a vegan one too). are actually quite nice and a serving with 15g of protein only has 60 cals - so just protein and flavouring in water. I’m re-reading a 10 (?) year old copy of Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle (Tom Venuto) and trying to remember if I actually tried following the advice before. It seems quite sensible so far |

I don’t like milk! I have milk in tea (fairly strong tea) and when I have cereal enough to make it damp! The few times I’ve done protein shake with milk I bought almond milk Another point …. Carb loading. Always thought it was a very good thing for endurance but was told this year eat as normal reduce training will have the desired effect. Which surprised me |

I am not sure that the intent of carb loading is like this. The way I understand carb loading is that you do it in the few days prior to an event such as a marathon where you are very likely to run for long enough to run out of stored glycogen therefore it makes sense to have as much as you possibly can. There are other ideas such as training your body to tolerate running on fat stores better but I think we quickly run into pseudosciencey type beliefs in this kind of area.

and I would agree with that TS which was why I was surprised at the advice I was given before my endurance event
