Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

At this stage, while you're not training for anything enormous, it might be worth looking at joining a local Slimming World/WW group. I'm no fan of the slimming diet industry, but these groups are an accessible way to get peer support and accountability and give you some structure for your everyday eating. That would cover the practical aspect of what to eat.

I'm sure there are assessed sports nutrition courses available from respected providers. Maybe someone else will be able to advise further on this.

As for books, I don't know what's currently trending. My own favourite is Clinical Sports Nutrition by Louise Burke and Vicki Deakin. It's quite technical. Louise Burke, whom I rate highly as a researcher in this field, has also co-written The Complete Guide to Food For Sports Performance with Greg Cox. I haven't read it but would be surprised if it wasn't good.

(I got rid of almost all my sports nutrition books when Fellmouse was anorexic because they were triggering for her.)

Do you mean there is more to bike nutrition than cycling to a coffee shop and consuming Bakewell tart and drinking black coffee.

Seriously it really helped me having my elder daughter taking Sport science at uni and the younger one taking an MSc in exercise physiology. So much depends on the goals of the exercise and where you are now to generalise

That's my approach to bike nutrition, HT, but I believe there are situations in which a rider may be so focused on arriving at their destination rather than enjoying the journey that they'd rather stuff a gel down their neck every 30 minutes and keep riding than stop at a café for coffee and cake ;)

I rarely ride far enough to justify it: I think the times I've made an actual bike café stop are about four. And one of them was ice-cream. And a couple of pub stops.

There is a middle ground: hop off for 3-5 minutes, that's long enough for a cereal bar or choc-based bar, and a drink. Less applicable during an actual triathlon perhaps.

I've just had my first glass of protein shake. I've joined a gym and been (a bit intermittently) lifting some weights. Nobody's drinking this stuff because they like it, right? :-o

Despite the lack of broshakes so far, I've put on around seven pounds over fourteen weeks. I think I may be suffering from sports over-nutrition.

I quite like my morning protein shake. Usually have one every day except my rest day on Sunday. It’s a chocolate flavour one. I add a spoon of extra virgin olive oil to the shaker to make it smoother. Nicer with that.

I ride to eat and purposefully plan to ride past good coffee, cayke and lunches.
I even stopped to enjoy a 6 course meal at a michin star restaurant on my Trans Continental Race :)
But: that is after nearly dying and shifting focus of what is important.
Before that, I raced pretty seriously and although long training rides contained coffee, cake and lunch stops, I never used gels in training but for emergencies, i.e. to avert bonking if coffee and cake far away, I had coaches and a sports physician who made sure I was properly fed... I have a tendency towards too low a weight and not enough fat to sustain serious racing/training so equallly important to get things right.
Coach was provided ny BC, but I paid for the sports physiologist who did the lactate treshold testing, set my HR zones, measured fat and gave advice on nutrition and race fuelling.
