It wasn’t a great tackle though. Players have to learn to use their arms.

The rule came in as teams were taking the piss on the scrum: if they were under the cosh they'd say front row injury and we don't have a replacement so need to go to uncontested. So rule came in that if it goes to uncontested because you don't have a replacement front row available, you lose a player.
The nightmare for Italy is that they got unto that position because their replacement hooker was sent off

What a nightmare for Italy, seems unfair that they have to lose 2 players for just the one offence. Killed it as a contest

I'm no expert but why can't anyone play as a makeshift front row? Probably not much difference than an outfield player replacing a goalkeeper in football.

Safety. The risk of neck injuries in the front row means you have to know what you’re doing.

Front rowers are the only.players who can co.e back on after they've been substituted off, purely because it is a specialist position with major safety issues. Look up Matt Hampson for an (extreme) example of what can go wrong

Matt Hampson wasn’t even in a match. I try and chuck a few quid towards his foundation when I can, he’s an inspiration.

Oh FFS, couldn't the ref have let that go?!? Absolutely brutal end for poor old Italy

You mean the yellow? letting it go would have been the wrong thing to do.
