Can hardly imagine that nowadays. G Jamie Roberts, played for Wales and the Lions between 2008 and 2017, finished his medical training somewhere in the middle of that period iirc.

Laura Muir had to fit 7 years of vet training in there somewhere, I remember one year she missed a couple of champs doing her exams. G
