They might have had more lax wear standards back then as you could hardly read some of the old pennies. I remember looking out for Victorian bun pennies of 1860 or 61, shillings before IIRC 1937 and 1921 which had a high proportion of silver in them, etc. There were reputed to be a few Ed VIII threepenny bits 1938 in circulation before he abdicated but I never found one, despite having a child's toy cashbox full of 3ds.

I suspect there will still be Elizabeth II coins in circulation AFTER Charles AND William are gone too.

Soon the Mint will actively (albeit slowly) replace them, so while they'll be legal tender for a very long time to come they will probably begin to be phased out.
