I get that the grooves in a record follow the output. What astounds me is that the moulding process can reproduce that master image with the accuracy to differentiate the same note being played simultaneously on lots of different instruments.

That's the human ear, isn't it macca? As in, a single sound wave can contain dozens, hundreds of separate sound sources, and the human ear (and brain) can then distinguish between them. And actually, it doesn't actually "hear" everything, some of it is brain interpretation, so that's why we can mishear and be fooled by sounds (same with optical illusions for the eye)? :-) G

I probably get a bit defensive about evolution because far too often when someone says "How can this possibly be?" online they're really saying "I don't believe it and therefore God did it", which is an even less believable hypothesis given the evidence.

If that wasn't where we were heading, and if I was a bit prickly in responding, my apologies.

In the "Science" thread Nellers? Nope, prickles away. Unless you think evolving them would be beneficial to you in some way. In which case, natural selection, the only proven theory of development of complex life, would keep them and pass them on to your progeny! ;-)

:) G - regarding your dependency diagram, here's something that happened because of a dependency on one small module... Java-related...

I couldn’t help thinking of :)G’s Nebraska chap as being somewhat similar to the nuclear missiles codes (allegedly) being dependent on Windows 95 or something equally obsolete…

Though a brief look around would suggest their god would be the most chaotic and frankly disorganised individual imaginable! The amount of bizarre solutions and redundant bits nature has makes me more inclined towards evolution rather than some focused efficient design.

Prickles away then.😃

So here’s a thing I don’t quite understand:

In astronomy we know how bright and distant a star is from us. We can differentiate between dim nearby objects and brighter but far more distant objects.

To the unsophisticated eye (eg mine) these 2 things look the same.

So how do astronomers know the difference?

I’ve heard, but not fully understood, an explanation that some stars are “standard candles”, ie. They are known to be a particular brightness so their distance can be judged by how much of their light reaches us ie how much they are dimmed by their distance from us. That just makes me wonder how Standard Candle stars are identified in the first place.

I’m guessing the explanation is going to involve redshift and I’m probably close but I just can’t yet join the dots.

Anyone care to help a bear of very little brain?

I thought it would be cool to have a science thread. The idea being to share cool science that you've found out about. Or maybe to ask science questions that you don't know the answer to. Or science answers that you don't know the question to. It doesn't have to be highly complex stuff, it can just be everyday stuff that you can explain with science e.g. why do we get condensation on the inside of windows? But it can also be complex stuff. Or Youtube videos you've found ...
