TR... very frustrating for you, impressive cross training so far.

LMH.. best of luck with your operation, never a good time to have anything debilitating.

OO61.. have you had your knee diagnosed (apologies if I've missed anything).

Jooligan.. nice work on your comeback, the Parkrun times should drop eventually.

TT.. good work on the early run & weights after the lack of sleep. Hope you get a longer snooze tonight.

Much friendlier temps today so got out for 10.5m, nearly all the ice has gone.

TR the sprints efforts were runs, but came a few hours after the swim sesh yesterday. Hope you get back running soon.
OO I agree your assessment, I'll have to tone down the swim push-offs and see if it helps.
No wardi Christmas got in the way of seeing anybody, beyond a massage, but on to it. That's a good long run, good effort sir.
LMH. 2 ops on my left hand, both unsuccessful- 2 fingers curled up which is awkward as I'm left handed. I like doing DIY but have to hold tools with 2 fingers now. And when I wear gloves, likewise 2 empty finger holes flap about. Now the right hand is going. When I eventually see the consultant I plan to ask about the needle option. I'd like to avoid another operation if I can, at least in the first instance. What is your experience?

Double run day today- 2 times 5 miles but holding back somewhat. Tomorrow is an easy morning run with my wife then a mile race in the evening.
TT are you sleep issues regular or just a one off bad night? Hopefully the latter.

Evening

LMH - the sick pay/holiday pay is a draw back of bank/agency work. Can you claim SSP it’s all I can claim in the private nursing home sector.

OO61 I would imagine the turn can make knee problems worse. Nice double today.

TT hope the sleep problems improve. Exercise seems to be increasing nicely

Coming back nicely Jooligan

Nice running wardi

Really pleasing run today. No ice or snow on the paths today so did just under 9 miles in racing shoes with just under 2 miles in the middle around 20 secs than I was doing MP before the injury. No problems at all with the Achilles during or after the run. In a fit of optimism this evening I transferred my entry from an early April HM to the Tissington Marathon at the end of April. Can drive from home so no accommodation cost and can transfer to a half that runs along side the full. Not changing much in training at moment. Gradual increases the plan.

I'm surprised you don't get sick pay riggys. In the NHS bank workers aren't classed as employees so I don't think I can get SSP. You've got the back up option of the half with Tissington so it doesn't sound like a silly idea.

OO61 - nothing like as bad as that currently fortunately. I first started noticing a problem in the summer and thought I'd hurt my little finger gardening but since then it's progressed to the rest of the fingers on my right hand (and the physio said you could see it was going to happen in my left too). Unfortunately it's already started affecting my ADLs and work.

i think resting as much as you can is the quickest way back to training TR.

Supposed to be the warmest day of the week today, paths were mostly clear when I ran yesterday so no excuse not to get this week's longer/long run done.

TT – that's a decent ruin by junior. Hope your sleep has improved.

OO61 – fair enough. Yes, there is only one here and I don’t particularly like the route so another reason not to go. It was nice to see some familiar faces and they did comment and say where had I been for the past few years. I live on an island 9 x 5 miles but can go under the radar if I choose to, I like that. I did not realise you had that issue with your hands.

LMH – oh right, that is worrying. Enjoy your long run.

Riggys – what racing shoes have you got? Good run and nice back up plan too.

Wardi – nice double-digit run. Glad the temps have improved. Ice is so dangerous.

FJ – good to see you back to it. Are you fully recovered now?

TR – I had 2 weeks off too with my groin issue, hasn't set me back to much but then I don't have a marathon lined up in Spring but I hope you can make a start next week, all being well.

OO – what is the OCC race? I've heard of it mentioned in the UTMB but have no idea what it is. One guy I know here did the 100 plus mile one last year. Looks brutal.

Had the gym induction last night, my first ever gym induction, aged 50, Lols. It was actually very enjoyable. Did a Milon circuit x 2. For anyone unfamiliar or remotely interested, there is a circuit of eccentric machines that are pre-programmed with your body metrics, and you do 1 minute on the weights and 4 minutes on the cardio machines and keep moving and repeat the circuit. The longest you must wait to use one is a few minutes, which is good. All went well, except for the cross-walker thing. My glutes and quads were feeling a tad useless after my session the previous day. An efficient 35 minutes well spent. Did some swimming afterwards and of course jacuzzi pool and ice plunge pool. Blister seems to have calmed down now, so I will get out for my first run of the week this evening. Weather is dry but cold.

My lovely soon to be wife bought me the new Adidas Pro 4's for my upcoming birthday. I have gone a bit mad recently and purchased 3 new pairs of running shoes. I got the Saucony EP 4, Adidas Boston 12 and the Adidas Pro 3's. I will sample the Pro 4's on my birthday and squirrel them away for my marathon later in the year. I still have a pair of the Vaporfly 2's that have less than 100 miles in them plus about 10 other pairs languishing around in the house. Nice to have a good rotation of shoes.

Ouch - a podium would be good again

Wardi - 10m midweek is good going

OO61 - running sprints ? No wonder your knee aches, the day after a 20+ miler. I guess that's cos of your mile race. Is that a track race in January?

LMH - hope you got the long run done......I'd agree with you if i just had hammy damage, but the hammy tightness is due to the nerve (some schools of thought say it isn't the hammy that hurts anyway, it's the nerve running through it), and the sciatic stuff needs movement to help it. So the aim is to avoid anything which makes the hammy nerve/tightness pinch.

Gerard - nice one on the induction, do you have freeweight access too? I'd like a pair of Endorphin pro4 or elites, no need at the mo though.

Extended my bike commute (On the mtb) and did 8 x 3min sheepish hills (1min to get back down) and got a pretty decent 60min done, reminds me of the triathlon days.

I think my disappointing time at parkrun can be attributed to the Xmas weight gain on top of the reduced exercise load since Eryri as a result of the double whammy: injury & covid. I ventured onto the scales for the first time yesterday and I've managed to almost gain a staggering stone: 81.5kg so close to setting a new PB in one thing at least this year 🤣

You interested in bike races/sportives @TR?

Not got a 200th in mind @OuchOuch I've done all the parkruns in the SW & most of the Welsh ones apart from a couple in N.Wales & E Dorset so it'll be a while

That's a fair bit of excess timber FJ. Hopefully it will disappear now you're getting back into it.

I'm surprised anyone can go under the radar somewhere as small as Jersey Gerard. Good that you're enjoying the gym stuff.

Does the cycling not aggravate it at all TR?

I almost didn't run this morning - two people off sick so work available - but I knew that if I didn't get the long one done today it wasn't going to happen so I resisted the urge to earn despite needing two new tyres which are going to cost me £100 tomorrow <<sigh>>. Grey and drizzly when I set off and didn't feel anywhere near as warm as the Met were saying but not unpleasant especially after the last few days. Managed to talk the sixteen minimum up to eighteen and was contemplating making it twenty but ran out of oomph. Needed some fuel I think. My 250 calorie(ish) breakfast just wasn't quite enough. Sun's out now and it's positively nice.

TR - yes. Have a look here. https://www.healthhaus.co.uk/. It's got quite a few different "suites". I really like the EP4's. I think they are my favourite of the 3 new ones I got recently. They seem to fit my running style and the way I land better. They are not as responsive, as say the VF2's but they're very good. I would run long distance in them without any concerns.

LMH - You'll see when you visit. The size itself is misleading, there are 12 parishes in the island & it's quite diverse. The parkrun is on the west of the island, the only time I venture out there is to go to the beach or run late at night when my son is at football. I also, don't train with the athletics club anymore (been several years) so I don't tend to bump into the usual crowd of runners on the island. I'm very content to do my own thing but have the odd jog with some running pals. I'm not a prolific local racer either, well not anymore. Well done on the 18. What sort of time on feet is that? I did 2:18 last week unfuelled and felt fine but I think my cut off would be about 2:30.I don't have breakfast before my long run either, just coffee. If I do a sesh on the LR (say some MP miles) then I will bring some fuel with me.

FJ, that weight gain would definitely explain away an underpar parkrun effort.

Ouchouch, just as well you found that out before throwing everything into it. Thanks for the info, will have a look on booking.com or similar over the weekend.

TR, some decent bike work there. I was telling a female clubmate who is training for London and injured that you can pretty much replicate your running schedule on the bike, probably with a bit more quality, in the short-term and come out of it with barely any lost running fitness. Which mara are you targeting? I noted you said it was 12 weeks so can't be London.

LMH, good work on the 18. Similarly I went out lunchtime in a thin long sleeved top and no gloves as the sun was out then within 2 miles i was in the country lanes and it was quite misty and feeling much colder.

Wardi, nice work on the 10. Are you running Brass Monkey? Shaping up nicely weather wise, looks almost perfect. My mate is running it, be interested to see how he fares as he ran a 34.xx 10k before xmas and has a half pb of 80 mins. He's also running Tokyo and it's 3-0 to me in marathon head to heads so far so I am wondering if he will get me this time!

Riggsy, good work, hopefully the racing shoes won't wind it up at all.

OO, good luck in the mile race, hopefully the knee will hold out. Hadn't realised you had that hand issue, hope you get it sorted soon.

Gerard, she sounds like a keeper! Gym sounds like a good little addition there, particularly the spa facilities you mention.

TT, hope the insomnia was short lived. I used to suffer terribly but have resolved it largely over the last 4 or 5 years. Fe steps I have taken involve establishing a regular bedtime, I switch devices off at 10pm generally and they don't come in the bedroom. Also I don't have a clock in the room and don't look at my watch at all from when I start going to sleep until the alarm goes as knowing the time stressed me out. Sometimes I get up in the night to go to the toilet and 10 mins later the alarm goes off. Finally, when I do wake in the small hours and the mind explodes I don't stress about not being asleep, I take the view that even just lying still and comfortably brings with it restful gains over and above getting up and not being there at all. Plus I believe that the line between awake and light sleep is very fine and often we are in fact asleep when we don't think we are. None of this however helps me if I am sleeping anywhere else beyond my own bed however, that's a totally different game.

Ticking over nicley here, though the step up from mid 50s to mid 60s miles per week is definitely noticeable in my residual fatigue.

Decent session yesterday of 3 x 2m at threshold off 2 min steady float, 6.6m in total for 6.00mm average pace for session and 10.5m in total. Easy 12m then over lunchtime.

Hi

Fetch has said us RW refugees can relocate here. I know there are existing sub3 and 3.15 threads, but the fetch threads seem to be for more infrequent posters. The RW threads are more of a daily diary.

We'll see how it goes.

I'm a M57 hanging on to sub3. I'm unattached harriers so like a place to talk a bit of running and find some inspiration and accountability.
