Those race walkers can complete a marathon at a faster pace than I can run a 5k :-)

That's just bizarre and I think organiser should have taken the decision that the route really was a no go with that stipulation and really should have told you before you paid.

The organiser says it will be quicker walking through the garden, than descending a large flight of steps, along a bit at the river, then back up another flight of steps to the viaduct. Which is probably true, but then I wouldn't expect a course advertised as a "flat, fast course" to be going up and down large flight of steps, anymore than I'd expect to to enforce sections of running

Refund for me.

He should have this detailed on the website, rarher than only telling you once you get your number ( if you read the instructions sent to you)

Annabomb, if you do run, please let us know how it goes

I'm guessing that the garden currently has no right of way through it and the landowner has agreed to this detour out of goodwill. However, if it is a public footpath then I don't believe they can impose such a rule - they can make the request of course but if it is a right of way then theres nothing to stop 200 people deciding to go out for a run that morning and happen to use that footpath (unlikely though that scenario is) without notifying the garden owner anyway.

A section of the right of way footpath is closed for works of some sort, and the detour is down steps to the river, along a bit, then back up another flight of steps.
The organiser has reached agreement with the owner to let the race go through his private garden to avoid us having 4 flights of steps to negotiate........BUT the owner has stipulated that we have to walk, not run.

Ah - if there is no public right of way through the garden then I guess the owner can impose whatever conditions he wants - but it's a shame that the organisers didn't negotiate this better. I put on a race in which I wanted to send runners along the edge of a field rather than make them cross a main A road twice. I negotiated with the landowner well ahead of the race (and would have been prepared to offer him some money from the entry fees if need be but he was fine about it) and made sure runners knew that they were crossing private land and should they ever come back to run the course of the race again there would be no permission to use that field another time. Sounds like bad race organisation.... surely an RD who is told part of the course is walking only would think 'hang on..... that's not going to work.'

It seems to me there are four options:

1) introduce lots of steps to the race and lower the quality of it
2) force runners to walk part of it
3) move the race to a different location for one year
4) move the race to a time when the problem doesn't occur.

It's up to the race organisers which plan to go with. If a resident has put an option on the table which is deemed to be the best, that person should be congratulated for their help in making the event happen.

Personally, I'd see the first two options as undesirable, given they could both put participants off the event and not come back in future years. If this is a long-term event I'd be thinking in the long-term interests it's best to have a year off, or an alternative date, rather than annoying runners and risking devaluing the event.

It's a bit difficult to have a year off in your first year?

Yeah, I feel a bit sorry for the organiser, sounds like the path closure has happened well after he's got the race organised and set up, so he's trying to make the best of it
