I had high hopes for Murphy - as a player he seemed to have a good footballing brain, but... :( And it's a real shame as he was a very loyal player, sticking with Tigers when returning to Ireland would have enhanced his international chances.

But it is true that sometimes the greats are great because they can do it instinctively, whereas the goods have to work at it and hence understand better how to explain it to others

Me too, and perhaps flanker can confirm, didn't the team have an initial resurgence when he first came in?

I think it was the case we had a slightly worse loss of form than just before and just after! His approach seemed to be worked back when he was in a the successful teams of a decade or two ago, and never quite seemed to adapt to the modern game.

Nice bloke though - had a chat with him in the bar after a match many moons ago.

6 Nations, Champions Cup don't really care, as a junior (colts and below) coach, the latest views on scrum resets, choke tackles etc just concern me. It feels as though we are going down a touch rugby route. If you want to do touch then do touch. If you can't do contact then don't do rugby union, is my simple approach. I get the need for cash revenue but call it something else. The game is suffering already, don't turn more players (spectators) off with the need to chase TV revenues.

Do you think it might go back more to the amateur days, clubs not being able to afford all the overseas players and the home talent more spread out, or will we end up with 3 or 4 super clubs?

I agree, no need to make major changes that are going to drastically change the game just to get it back sooner. I’d much rather the game was gone longer but when it returned it was as close to normal as possible, than rush it back with a strange format

Honestly, I don't know, with the removal of half the funding for the Chamionship side, my local side is now going semi pro. We will now have a ringfenced top tier of 13 clubs (I see the farce of a relegation/ promotion yoyo continuing for a while). The real debate to me is central contracting, the club owners have always resisted, its the club/ country debate. That will ultimately decide funding. I still see overseas players coming largely because I don't see the French stopping and we will get overspill.

You may have got the RFU's survey on the state of the game. It was actually a thinly disguised, how do we (RFU) get you (punter) back to the Autumn Internationals which is a big cash earner for us. With the exception of being in a transport tube (bus, train, plane) I couldn't imagine much worse for Covid transmission than trying to get in and out of a sports stadium.
