My thinking is that the nav is easier in the later stages, so I'd rather leave it as late as possible before it gets dark.
Plus in 85 miles there is always the likelihood of problems (!), so I'd rather have the extra 2 hours of leeway on the cut-off times.

So our advice to zoyen (welcome btw) is... ?
Take your pick. There will be slower runners starting at 12. I don't think most people would have an issue with the checkpoint cut offs, but like flanker says more time with an earlier start if problems occur.

Welcome to Fetch zoyen!
I'm gonna start at noon. I think Jen J suggested noon, for some good reasons that I can't remember. But she's a wise cookie... I think one of her points may have been that it's nice to catch up with and overtake the people who started earlier. There was more to it than that though.
Good luck with the training anyway.

I started at noon last year, and will do the same again.
It's easier for me in terms of travelling on public transport to arrive in Tring later, plus from a personal point of view I hate having people run up behind me, so to have the majority of the field overtaking me would bother me lots.
I found starting at noon to be fine, but I'd recce'd the route first. Having said that, the route from Goring is straight-forward, so I'll just be aiming to get to Goring before dark this time (last year was about 30 minutes after dark).
Although official times on something like this aren't the key motivator, the fact that they penalise 10am starters who finish under 23 hours suggests to me that noon is the 'proper' start, with the 10am start for those who expect to be slow, rather than choosing that for the light advantage.
But that's just my opinion, and you are given the choice.

yup, I'm on the 12 start. Will have the route in my 3 Garmins again. I borrowed a mates last year and as far as I know it's still got them on it.

I'll be on the 10 o'clock start. Maybe that makes me a slow un-proper runner

3 garmins? You mean this can't be done in 8 hours?

I was thinking 2. 1 to Goring and then another to the end

Agree with Jen's points, getting the extra advantage from the light when you know you ought to be under 24 hours is not really cricket, although I would dispute that official times aren't the key motivator... they are for some people.
