Action coming soon. Break has no chance with the gap non-existent.

Carlton just came out with ‘Mas always looks like he’s struggling. Even when he comes down for breakfast, if I’m honest’. :)

That made me laugh too.

But he’s so annoying. Talking about Remco burying ghosts but then not expanding on it (for people like me who don’t have encyclopaedic cycling knowledge)

They talked about Remco earlier - broke his pelvis on these roads, if not this exact descent.

I'm not a Kirby fan but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt there as they'd mentioned the crash previously so he'd likely see it as a continuation I presume.

It's an interesting one as there is sometimes a lot repetition in commentary presumably because they want to explain things to people just switching on.

Big_G: other way around - today they climbed the descent he crashed on. Hit a bridge parapet and disappeared down a gulley, leaving his bike behind on the road in the process. Properly scary as a viewer until they found him.

It was 2020, but because they change the course each year, it's the first time they've summited Sormano since.

On Pog and his long range solos. What are the physiological things he's doing that make this tactic work so well?

I can't understand that when you're 3k from the top of a MTF stage and you've been riding hard all day, that having that extra "kick" that others have already ridden out of themselves during the day is what sets him apart (on that day); clearly influenced by strategies during the rest of the day throughout the team etc.

But when on the one day races he goes with 50+km to go, why can no-one ride with him as presumably no-one is on their limit at that point? Or is he going absolutely as "deep" as he can at that point (which remains deeper than anyone else can go) and that extra that he has at that point is then sufficient to get him away AND he has the sustained staying power to ride solo off the front only by what in energy terms must ultimately be a small margin?

e.g. if after 5 hours and 200km ridden he is 40s up the road, he's taken 18,000 seconds to get that point, whereas his opponents will take 18,040.

S=D/T, so he's averaged so he's averaged 40km/h. They've averaged 39.91kmh.

Using this calculator with some default data in it for weight etc, he's needed about 3w more per hour (on average) to get to that point in the race; but he's probably put in a sustained kick at a much higher rate of watts for a brief period, and then recovered back to the steady state after that.

And for the remaining hour he's got to sustain that steady state, compared to the other riders who (putting psychology aside) ought to be able to individually recover many more watts than that due to drafting etc.

In "numbers" terms, what sort of a gap in power does that look like to make his success happen?
