Having no radios can definitely hugely influence a race Larkim. Even riders say so. A few examples from this year’s world champs road races, even. Didn’t AvV raise her arms thinking she’d won the Olympics (no radios), when in fact she was second? It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that if she’d known she was second, and had known that someone had escaped from the breakaway, she would have raced differently, which may have influenced the race in some way. (“I was wrong,” Van Vleuten told her coach after realising her mistake. “We didn’t get any info.”).

Yes, I'm not saying they are utterly worthless. Just that they are not as reliable and controling as they may be alleged to be. If they had zero use then teams wouldnt use them.

I'm still amazed that Remco's team didn't tell "You can win this, push push push" or similar in the last few metres which would have pretty unambiguously told him where things were.

You said “I suspect they are far less useful than we might imagine”, but there are numerous examples where they are very useful. But they’re far from perfect, which is different to saying they’re not useful.

One of the reasons teams and risers like radios is they get info back from the riders so they know what's happening straight away rather than via TV.

The issue with Evenepoel is there was no reason for the team to even think he didn't know the break had been caught. They were less than 30 secs behind as they started the climb and went up at a pace where it seemed pretty clear no one could have survived. It wasn't a last minute catch.

Another day with GC taken early. The finish is a muddy quagmire, so times taken at 2.6km. Not having much luck with conditions in this Vuelta.

They've apparently changed it to 50m before 2km now. Hope Evenepoel was paying attention!

Any thoughts on the iTT then? Do we really know how good or bad Kuss is at them? Presumably often, as he’s not the team leader usually, he doesn’t go all out on the iTT? He’s 2:22 ahead of Remco, and slightly more up on his team mates. Seems likely those gaps will drop to him, but by how much? And how much of a time gap do Jumbo need before as a team they fall behind Kuss as the leader? So many questions and scenarios. I am one of those who enjoy iTTs anyway, and this next one could be exciting.

I’m sure I’ve seen on previous TTTs in other tours the team protect Kuss by having him in last wheel and not taking a pull on the front. Does that indicate he’s pretty poor on the TT bike?

If he’s still over a minute ahead, it could be interesting over the next couple of weeks I guess! I’d love to see Kuss do it, but a long way to go and let’s hope he’s at least reasonable on the iTT so he still has a shot.
