There's no reason to fall behind Kuss (sacrificing Roglic and Vingegaard), the road will decide if he can keep the jersey but he's not the strongest non-Jumbo climber here currently and is third strongest on his team. If Evenepoel et al are all weaker than Jumbo's trio then the strongest rider doesn't have to win, but until that happens, the Kuss card just keeps the other teams under pressure.

Sure I've posted this before but here's the article about Kuss and being happy not being a GC leader from the winter: cyclingnews.com

While that has moved a bit, it's pretty clear that jumping behind in this race would be a bad idea. Even if he didn't crack due to pressure, he's in his third GT and his legs could eventually go given he'll need to work every day rather than take to odd day off as he can as a dom.

Evenepoel will gain quite a bit on Kuss I think, but maybe a shot to nothing means Kuss limits the losses, I expect Kuss to still be in red though. I'd expect Evenepoel to likely gain on Roglic and Vingegaard (not in TDF form) as well, how much will be interesting to see.

This interview with Sepp Kuss after yesterday's stage is a decent listen: buzzsprout.com

To me it seems to make it clear that keeping the pressure off him is the right thing to do.

Looks like a decent TT result overall for the GC fight. Kuss still a decent lead and limited losses very well, Roglic clearly on form with that ride. Vingegaard not in Tour form as you'd expect. Evenepoel good and well paced there based on Ganna.

Good summary SPR. It’s all to play for still.

Probably should add UAE had a decent day. I'm not expecting them to win the race but they can get involved in shaping it.

Will be interesting to see who Jumbo back. Would love to see them explicitly ride for Kuss and set Roglic / Vingegaard in superdom roles, happy to let them win if Kuss cracks badly. I guess though they are in the business of getting any one of their team to win, and that might mean they give Roglic the nod to play the tactics and call Kuss to his aid.

They don't need to back anyone, they can (and plan to from what I read) play all three cards.

In the interview I posted, Kuss specifically said, he has more freedom and can take more risk. I wouldn't be surprised to see him or Vingegaard trying longer range stuff with Roglic playing the mountain sprinter role which he's good at. The weekend is super tough though and the strongest is likely to show themselves there unless somehow the race is ridden at an easy pace.

They must have some sort of priority though - if Kuss and Roglic sit in the team briefing in the morning and one says "I'm feeling good, I want to go at the start of climb A today" and the other says "...climb B" surely they need to decide who makes the call? Or if they are 5km from the finish and Roglic is itching to attack but Kuss says he needs Rog and Ving to tow him to the finish, they've got choices to make about who they back.

There are definitely circumstances where they need to make a choice between the three cards they do have because their fates could well be intertwined.
