Kuss isn't going to say he needs Vingegaard and Roglic to tow him to the finish and that isn't going to happen while both have been showing they are stronger in the mountains than Kuss. If the other teams attack, those that can cover will cover. Any attack plan will be to work over Evenepoel where one goes and the other two sit for a little while.

The strength hierarchy would obviously have Roglic top currently based on his TT and the evidence of the past week, but there's no reason to make things easier for the other teams. They have to chase all three.

Also I've posted quite a bit about Kuss and his mentality. Having him racing without pressure is perfect. If he is stronger than the non-Jumbo leaders, he has a good chance of winning the race as the other two will be happy for him to win if he has the legs.

If/ when Evenepoel gets a chance to ride sustained tempo, that will be a big test of the Jumbo leaders. I say if as there may be an attack plan that disrupts that.

I think Roglic is the team leader, as he is the strongest rider in that team currently. But if he falls apart for whatever reasons they’ve got Kuss as the backup.

Why isn't Kuss going to call on one of the other two? Roglic or Vingegaard could / would always call Kuss to support if necessary, so unless he is a lower prioritised "leader" then surely he ought to have that right too?

It's not utterly unreasonable to imagine that at some point there'll be an urgent decision needing making in response to an attack from elsewhere and in the confusion they may delay long enough to put out the right response.

If behind the scenes they are saying Roglic is the clear #1 for the team (which, reading between the lines a little from that article, they are sort of acknowledging) then maybe there is clarity in the team about how they handle situations when they are on the bikes.

You already know the answer to this. Kuss is a designated dom, Roglic and Vingegaard are not, they are protected riders.

Roglic is also the rider with the best prep for this race. Kuss and Vingegaard could easily tail off at some point due to the previous GTs

It's not really hard for them to deal with attacks if they have legs. They all mark Evenepoel, possibly divide UAE or deal with it via the team if they aren't that strong.

I expect at some point they end up with a max of two protected riders but I'm expecting the road to decide this.

Also again re Kuss mentality, this works for him because it is shot to nothing. If he doesn't win, it doesn't matter.

The only real problem for Jumbo is if Evenepoel (or someone else) is stronger than all three at some point.

So there aren't three equal cards being played then?

To Sepp - "look, you're riding great and if you can win this we'll be happy for you - but we'll not dedicate any riders to help you at any point, so you're on your own buddy; and we may contractually ask you to sacrifice your own position to help Primiz or Jonas".

Maybe I was just being unrealistic in expecting that they'd support Kuss at all; I know he can definitely play a disrupting part in the next few days because Evenepoel and others who want to win need to dispose of him as well as the main two Jumbo leaders, but I was hoping that they might switch up their strategy a little and provide some formal backing for him given how well he has ridden so far. It just feels odd that they'll be out on the road, with Jumbo dictating the peleton pace etc but actually riding not for the guy in red, but the guy behind him in the standard team kit.

They aren't asking Kuss to sacrifice either, that's the point. The reward for his performance is that he is now protected but all three are essentially riding with the legs they have but coordinating their attacks to put the others under pressure. You aren't going to sacrifice riders that are riding better for him though, it doesn't make sense. Protection only works if you have the legs.

BTW the Kuss and Roglic wanted to attack has already played out and Kuss was the one that attacked. And again, for Kuss this works, he doesn't want the pressure. Have you read/ listened to the stuff I posted a couple of days ago?
