larkim, I presume he thought there were riders up the road ahead of them. He said that if he’d known they were contesting the win (ie if he’d known there were no other riders up the road), he’d easily won as he said he thought Roglic wasn’t that quick.

Aha, makes sense. I literally only watched the last four minutes of the race.
But does seem peculiar that he wouldn't know if he was in the lead pack or not. I though race radios were a pervasive evil which meant they all knew everything all the time?

Just rewound to hear him, very odd!! Saying he didn't hear. Surprised they weren't yelling at him in the last 300m over the radio. But he says his error and felt everyone else was easily beatable! Fighting talk!!

I guess the question is how much he really had left (and whether Roglic could have done more). I guess we can take him at his word that he didn't realise it was for the stage but if he could have beat Roglic to the line easily, I think he does it for psychological value, so I think even if he could have won, it wouldn't have been easy.
I suppose he might have played the run in differently if he'd known so he could save energy.

From what my daughter says, radios are fairly useless on a bike (sound, other noise, distortion). From her experience. What she wants is silence, unless it's "Go hard now" or "Take it easy"
It's not like what we hear on the TV when they play it.

That's always been my expectation, um, when those who decry radios seem to suggest they give clear info all the time. I suspect they are far less useful than we might imagine.

There is something of a probably only slightly facetious line that the radio is largely DSs perpetually telling riders to move up now and to eat. I imagine detailed tactical decisions are rarely made on the fly through it, as, if team cars are well back in the convoy they're either waiting on delayed broadcast footage or info from 'radio tour' or equivalent.

It's not just people decrying race radios. Riders moan when they don't have it and we've definitely seen confusion when they don't have it or breaks needing to be kept on a tighter leash. There's no doubt it has an effect.
