Even if they had a plan straight out of the box (and how could they, given they've been out of power for 14 years) I suspect it would be 5 years-ish before it could be implemented. There's no magic wand on this one and expecting it in the first term is rather unrealistic, I would suggest, particularly when there are so many other things to fix.

Labour has committed to build a National Care Service that works for everyone who needs it. It will be founded on Labour’s enduring belief in fairness and responsibility. We will ensure everyone has the dignity and security they need in their old age. We will ensure that people with disabilities are supported to live independently. We are committed to reforming the care provider system. We will end the postcode lottery of eligibility for care and we will provide the support people need with their personal care. Our National Care Service will ensure that social care is a universally-available service, with personal care provided free at the point of use, and that all who need it can access it. Nation cheers... ...But we will have to add 5p to income tax to pay for it... ...Nation elects Semi Goodenough... |

There already was the Dilnott review (and numerous other reports and reviews over the years). It’s not like they haven’t had several decades to think about it. As for not attempting anything transformative, what actually is their point? Just a few years keeping the tories’ seats warm? |

Well, I suppose if you say it quick enough it's dead easy, but I suspect it's a bit more complicated than that...

Streeting said he had invited opposition parties to take part in the commission "to build a cross-party consensus to ensure the National Care Service survives governments of different shades, just as our NHS has for the past 76 years". He told BBC Breakfast there was "genuine desire" from across the political spectrum "to work together", calling it "a big moment for social care". When asked if proposed funding for the sector was enough, the health secretary said public services were "on their knees" and "there's so much more that needs to be done", but the process "would take time". Making it all Kemiproof would seem to be a good idea. As it is, I imagine this is as much about the politics and the money as it is about pure implementation. I'm old enough to remember the Maybot Dementia Tax and how it cost her the election and pitched us into 6 years of chaos... |

The situation is dynamic. Some times a report written even a single year ago is almost worthless. I find it amusing that people have short memories of Tory corruption. Show me the Mone? |

Total spend close to £30bn pa. Total workers >1.6m, Total receiving care c1m. It's big and it's costly and it's complicated. And a lot of it is private sector. Bollocks up the transition and it's a disaster. |
