The question is: Would you rather (a) tuition fees are raised by £750 per year or (b) some of the smaller universities - usually the ones in the towns (e.g. Huddersfield) where they are major employers and sources of revenue for the local economy, go bust. Those are your choices. There is no fantasy perfect left wing choice. |

As an aside, Huddersfield university shows no sign of financial difficulties from the outside, the perception is that judging by the amount of construction going on and students, from all over the globe, you trip over they must be rolling in cash

My employer is not, on the surface, in financial difficulty, but a recent survey showed that: 54% of academics feel more frequently overwhelmed than last year 67% of academics do not have an acceptable workload 94% of academics are working above contracted hours (31% working more than one additional day a week) Go figure. |

Yup. And we've had a lot of redundancies and VS schemes in the ten years I've been there. And leaving academics are not replaced. My ft post was replaced by giving an existing fractional 0.5 extra..

What was the plan to pay for it? Lincoln uni has taken over the whole town over the last 20 years or so, can’t imagine anyone being surprised if it can’t pay its bills. Sadly when that happens, Lincoln will suffer. |
