It's about money, while the UK 'owns' the island the US pays the UK rent, now Mauritius will get it.
But I imagine they've been cut out of foreign aid cos they don't need it now

Corbyn seems happy about it, so it must all be OK.

FML have a look at the front page of the mail on the subject.
There are people out there who actually think 'empire' is a legitimate thing.

Odd reason to bring up Corbyn.
The UK wouldn't be handing back the island if Mauritius didn't accept the base so I'm not sure it's about money.

The story is that the US supported the Mauritius deal publicly but privately warned against it. That's two-faced diplomacy from our partner in the "special relationship".
Gibraltar is next apparently.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the concerns expressed by the Tory candidates are also held by the US. They know what the UK will do, they don't know what a country with no strong affiliation to the West will do. They'd rather have certainty than do the right thing.

Odd thing for the right to try to get political capital out of.
As I understand it Cameron ignored the international law, the one who seriously initiated discussions was Truss. Sunak carried it onwards and it was near fait accompli by the time Starmer took office and signed off.

Cleverly specifically was working on it from the BBC article. Clearly trying to play to a certain crowd.

Have we found something positive that happened in Truss’s period as PM? 🤣🤣🤣

Did Truss initiate discussions as PM or foreign secretary? I'd be very surprised if she had time as PM, lol.
