I have never kittened anyone here and cannot imagine doing so. Even at its most intemperate, this place maintains a degree of civility which is alien to much of the rest of the Internet, and ad hominem attacks are rare. And I like to see the full diversity of views even when I may vehemently disagree with some of them. I've mentioned before my admiration for Fields' continuing to post here despite its being a rather hostile environment for him.

I welcome Fields' input too. I sometimes wish he'd give slightly longer answers and explanations, that's all. Help me pls - ad hominem means against a person, right? If I say "Bob is stupid" that is ah. But if I say "That thing or view is stupid, but the people who hold the view are lovely and cuddly" is that ad hominem?  G

Sometimes the critique returned does end up more like "You would think like that because you are a [insert simplistic definition with perjorative overtones]" which is pretty close to ad hominem. Or ascribing thoughts to people which are perceived extensions of stereotypes of views / perspectives. But I don't "kitten" and am pretty thick skinned so (mostly) I can live with the tone!!

I don’t kitten anyone but when it gets too heated I self-exclude for a day or two (especially if it’s a topic I’m not particularly swayed one way or t’other about or by) 😁
