I see some of the Tory leadership candidates are "doing their thing" today. Kemi Badenoch making claims that she was working class at some point in her life due to working at McDonalds*. Tugenhat trying to identify a non-existent power of the Attorney-General to get Edwards' sentence upgraded. [*I think she might actually have something of a point, given the circumstances in her life at the point at which she came back to the UK to live with a relative, but it's still being pilloried as a statement] Jenrick's winning in the betting markets. The man who would vote Trump over Harris. Heaven help the Tories! |

Train drivers have voted to back a pay deal that will resolve the last remaining conflict between rail operators and unions after two years of strikes that have brought misery for passengers. Good. |

Buffer zones around abortion clinics to come into force at end of October, Home Office says Protection zones will be in force around abortion clinics in England and Wales from 31 October, the Home Office said today. The so-called buffer zones will operate within a 150m radius of clinics. Safe access buffer zones will make it illegal for anyone to do anything that intentionally or recklessly influences someone’s decision to use abortion services, obstructs them, or causes harassment or distress to someone using or working at these premises. Anyone found guilty of breaking the law will face an unlimited fine. Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, said: For too long abortion clinics have been without these vital protections, and this government is determined to do all we can do to make this country a safer place for women. Good. |

“Labour will end the chaos of sleaze,” the party’s election-winning manifesto thundered. The nation, Keir Starmer promised, would “turn the page” after years of Conservative scandal. Yet, after less than three months in office, the prime minister is facing a slew of cronyism allegations of his own. Not so good. You go into the election promising to end sleaze, you'd damn well better do it. Buy your own glasses FFS. Not rocket science. |

Good. Yeah agreed. Watched a programme about abortion in the States. Definitely needs a safe space around the clinic. In the US they had volunteers who escorted the mothers to the door, and took a lot of the abuse. |

Chrisull wrote: Anyone read the Guardian's article on how the Labour right plotted (yes - properly planned) Corybn's downfall, didn't want him as PM as he wouldn't do the things they wanted doing (like what???). I mean we kind of already knew this, but it's quite explicit and sets out they really didn't want a Corbyn win in 2019. theguardian.com I've bookmarked it for days, and only just got round to reading it properly. It probably doesn't really tell me anything new that I didn't already know / guess. |
