I don't think anyone is assuming that Labour will be a one term wonder. In fact, if they are we're in deep trouble I think.

Thatcher needed the Falklands though to pull back that popularity. And whilst Callaghan's government wasn't great, it wasn't the accumulating shit show that the last few governments were either; the 70s were complex, uncertain. The pendulum was swinging slowly between broadly centrist positions on left and right, Thatcher added a bit more of a rightward swing, Foot would have offered a similar pull in the opposite direction but never got the chance after he was demolished in 1983. And from 83 onwards Thatcherism was "delivering" on some of its rhetoric in a way that bolstered her electoral chances, along with Labour being dysfunctional until Kinnock properly got a grip.

Labour aren't stupid, clearly they want to do unpopular stuff early when they hope it won't matter and they hope to get a payoff with improvement before the next election that will make everyone happy. Of course they'll likely say they need more than 5 years but I think they will have to show shoots of improvement for that to work.

Has austerity ever worked though or does it just lead to more of the same?

I don't think Jenrick or Badenoch are quite there as far as acquiring an empathy gene is concerned, so it's not surprising Bobby Jen would vote for Trump. I would hazard a guess that Mad Kem would as well, despite the unfortunate white nationalism.

Good news for Labour if either of them get in as they are both fairly mad.

I'm not sure it is good news as I think Labour's success will be more about how they do and a bad alternative can get in if it's the only other option (as far as people are concerned).

Also there's the issue of social cohesion. Major political parties sowing discord in society is never good and even if they don't achieve power it can have an effect, see the recent riots.

Not to mention pulling Labour ever-rightward as they fight over the same dwindling band of jingoistic pensioners.

We also have to remember they will have the media, eg the recent purchase of the Spectator and the potential purchase of the Telegraph by the GB news owner (?). i-news is owned by the Daily Mail isn't it and that used to be the independent.

Nah, I'm getting strong Michael Howard/IDS vibes from them both. They are leading a decimated gang of wingnuts and halfwits. You can't win anything with superannuated nutters - as Alex Ferguson nearly said.

"I-News" is former Johnstone Press, now DMGT
"Independent" is now owned by The Right Honorable Baron Lebedev of Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and of Siberia in the Russian Federation.

Is there some kind of symbolism about 2 or 3 months into this Labour government - especially after a 14 year shitshow - that people are already talking about chances in 2029?
