I can't disagree that his elevation to editor following working directly with the proprietor looks like he got at least some benefit from personal relationships. But it's wrong to say he leapt from Ch5 straight through to the Lebedev roles.

Not sure anyone was predicting what was happening in 2029, but if Labour don't offer something they will be a one term government. If they offer something, they may well get more. They've not even done their first budget yet, so who knows.

rf_fozzy wrote: pollyannaish So you're factually wrong, and I'm the one spinning a pollyanna-ish view? What bit of him working actually at the newspaper, prior to Lebedev's involvement, to a relatively senior level and one which was being well received at the time, with one of the smallest journalist teams on Fleet Street, means that over a career from 2007 to 2024 that the four and half years he spent working directly with Lebedev means his entire career is down to that four and a half year period? Maybe I'm putting words in your mouth about his entire career being down to that period. Nonetheless, he got his role with Lebedev based on (presumably) his track record to that point. He got the editorial job no doubt down in part to the way he had worked with Lebedev; that's utterly unsurprising. Thereafter though he has spent 8 years with the BBC. Is that all attributable to Russian influence, or is it, perhaps, more evidence of actual talent in his job? |

What's factually incorrect? He got the job as editor due to patronage from Lebedev. That's my entire point. But what he's done since has flowed from that patronage |

You have too kind a view of people at times. A little more cynicism required!

Disgraced Tory donor Frank Hester gave party £5m days before election. Money well spent, eh Frank? Bravo. |

It's not like he's going to miss the money, and he clearly thought the Tories were the best way to advance the type of views he holds (and is likely correct). He may switch to Reform if they get a proper foothold at some point.

re: larkim needing more cynicism (ditto on cyclists on drugs) Anyway - here's Rory Stewart attacking Starmer (though he doesn't explicitly mention him or Labour, but context) from the left: x.com "Politicians cannot keep pretending that we can deliver the NHS services that people expect without raising taxes - and that includes taxes on median earners…" |
