They hope to spark some sort of race war. You have to ask yourself, who would benefit from this country being destabilised in such a way ? Good article here theguardian.com |

Going to go out on a limb here* and suggest that the kind of diplomacy that the Biden adminstration has pulled off with the prisoner swap would not be possible under Trump. It's one of those things that requires finesse and things to move steadily in the background. Not bombast and bullying. *not really. |

It wouldn't even occur to Trump to attempt it - he's just see the those people as collateral damage

Don't really think that link provides what their end goal is. I can't help wonder how much Sunak and his Stop The Boats slogan are to blame for this re-rise in far-right activity. He - probably rightly - got quite angry during the election about the language being used by some of the Reform characters, but it's not him nor his family that are now in fear of their homes and lives. It might be poor anecdotal evidence but I noticed a marked drop in eye contact from minorities on my travels yesterday. |

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump could have executed the swap TBF and he would try and do it to boost his reputation. A lot of the stuff would be done by others in the background. Always a danger of Trump saying something to jeopardise the release but Putin seems to be one leader he doesn't really attack.

@paulcook I don't know how much family Sunak has in the UK but I can certainly imagine his extended family getting caught up in stuff by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The overall point about rhetoric having consequences is correct IMO and is why I'd say we shouldn't be hoping the Tories go more right or giving platforms to people that incite this stuff. There are consequences for the people they target even if the instigators never end up running the country. ATM I've not seen Farage use his parliamentary platform to do something he couldn't do before (not sure whether he gets more eyeballs now) but I can certainly imagine him using parliamentary privilege to say something he shouldn't at some point. |

Talking of Farage and his response, here's the Times cartoon today (posted without any comment about the irony of course) thetimes.com It might be blocked by the paywall, so here's hopefully another link. x.com |
