@jda remind me of what party you would rather have had in government that would have done more for relieving austerity than Labour? Genuine question, can't remember what your voting intentions were. Fields has previously answered, it was called the something Socialist Party (can't remember which one - Socialist Party of Great Britain, Socialist Workers Party, can't remember). My hope is in 6 months they'll have increased borrowing to pay for major infrastructure and fundamental services - education, housing, reduction in poverty through better welfare (all of which align with their growth stated goal, because a healthier, better educated populace is lower benefit cost, higher worker tax income base) paid for by increased taxation on the very wealthiest in society (including me!) Or at least some of this. If not, I shall be braying about austerity Labour just like you! G |

In fairness, if "Labour Austerity" means removing the extra winter fuel payments from those pensioners who don't need it, then that's not a terrible call. Presumably the threshold for Pension Credits is historically set by the previous administration, and at such a punitively low level that means it will still squeeze some who do need the winter fuel payments, so hopefully there will be a rebalancing there to ensure there are no unintended consequences (like hypothermia....). 🤞🏼 |

I agree that's not a bad call. Also no changes to Adults Social Care charges makes sense although that made sense a while ago as there was never enough funding for it.

IFS's response is that Labour have a legitimate grievance with the previous Tory government. The NI cut is something seen as even worse now and there are still issues to deal as per their previous warnings. Summary tweet: x.com Article: ifs.org.uk In another tweet PJ suggests Labour should really be reversing the NI cut which is about the size of the black hole. |

@HappyG(rrr) , I voted Green in the last election (and the previous, I think). We have an excellent local candidate and I understand that the popular Labour guy supported by the local party was NEC’d in favour of some placeman on the basis of something he posted in social media more than a decade previous. In reality I think he was too left wing and pro-EU for Starmer’s tastes.

Fair bit of backlash on our local Facebook group following the pension announcement. General opinion seems to be that the threshold is too low and many people who just don’t qualify for the benefit will struggle. General agreement though that the likes of Paul McCartney shouldn’t be getting it. One point raised repeatedly is that it punishes people who save for their future and rewards people who just spend their money as it comes in. |

As somebody who qualified for the WFA (and like a lot of pensioners it’s just a nice bonus before Christmas), I don’t have a problem with it being withdrawn. I think that the qualification for the payment needs to be reviewed to ensure that those in real need will not miss out. |

Good and fair points, needs tweaking then? So, Hunt on the R4 rebuffing Reeves saying the Tories plan for some of the spending was based around asylum seekers not coming, basically basing part of the nations finances on assuming that highly motivated people smugglers would just give up. What a tool. |

It's the ditching of the ceiling on social care costs that worries me. Not an issue for my family yet, thankfully, and hopefully will not be, but if I understand the move correctly others will still end up being completely cleaned out to pay for their care. I hope Ms Reeves has something planned to replace this.
