I'll be very pleased to applaud if and when they actually get rid of the cap, not when they say a few noncommittal and contradictory things about it. Because it matters to me what they actually do, not how they dress it up.

Good news is when they reverse course as jda suggested, the statement on the other page certainly isn't worth the crowing and I'm certain you would look at it differently if it wasn't 'your side'.

One interesting thing to determine is whether Labour actually end up doing what they say they are going to do, in general. If so, that in itself will mark a very significant change from the Tories. Under Boris Johnson in particular they seemed to have developed the habit of announcing things which would get the plaudits in the client press and then not following through (without getting any brickbats in the client press). Government entirely by soundbite. You wouldn't think it was possible but when you have the vast majority of the press working for you, you can get away with a lot. Let us hope that changes markedly under Labour. |

After Keir Starmer and education secretary Bridget Phillipson both indicated that the government would consider scrapping the two-child benefit cap on Monday morning, Downing Street has now denied that there has been a change in its position on the policy. The prime minister’s official spokesperson told reporters: “No. It’s as the chancellor said yesterday, it’s as the PM I think addressed this morning as well, the government has got a certain set of fiscal inheritance that it has to deal with.” --- The "task force" is their way of kicking the can down the road, it's quite obviously set up as an alternative to actually doing anything. Maybe at some point in the future, they will get round to it. Meanwhile, the children can chow down on thoughts and prayers and optimistic feelings. |

I saw yesterday that polling supports the position of not scrapping the cap. The only group to that supports scrapping the cap as a majority is 18-24 year olds. x.com |

Extremely weird to be listening to Braverman advocating for scrapping the cap currently.

The irony certainly wasn't lost on parliament. Seems another Tory deterrent a la Rwanda but one she's now acknowledging doesn't work.
