It's quite deliberate, to be seen to be acting as cruelly as possible. It seems to attract a particular sort of voter, and that's the ones they are after.

The barges policy is designed to delight a certain section of the voting populace who may have voted for a big change some years ago. In no way does it address the problems currently existing with asylum applications. Of course, had the big change not happened, the UK could have employed its rights under the Dublin Accord and we'd have less misery for those poor souls.

The game is up for the current government and they know it. Anything now is simply about individuals positioning themselves with the above mentioned section of the voting population for the revamped, no doubt even more right wing Tory party after the likely election loss.

I really feel it's more important to ask "what should be done now and in the future" rather than going over the past. Obviously we are informed by what has happened before, but don't think it helps to dwell on or to apportion blame. Anyhoo...

Agree 100% with this.

Another poll today (actually might be yesterday), especially in terms of the particular sort of voter they're trying to attract:

Predicted seats
Con 90
Lab 461
SNP 38
LDem 37

Wow with a majority like that Labour wouldn't have to worry appeasing the RWP for a couple of years

Perhaps I'm being pedantic, but that makes the rather large assumption that the leadership are appeasing them out of worry, rather than because they want to.

Exactly. Lineker said something like that about the BBC last week, and you could say the same for Labour (and lots of society). No need to appease those that will never like you anyway.

It's just performance politics. There'd have to be an awful lot more of these ruddy barges before the accommodation problem was solved. It's not a solution, it's just a load of old bollocks to play to their base. They seem to be doing a lot of that at the moment, in the absence of any plan to actually make the country better.

More than relaxed about Tories falling below 100 seats. They will fight like rats in a sack for years afterwards. They deserve it all and more for what they have done.

I don’t think a one party state is good even if it’s Labour.

Name-calling will be called out, and Ad hominem will be frowned upon. :-) And whatabout-ery sits somewhere above responding to tone and below contradiction.
