The most intractable political problems facing the world are driven by the past. It would be a serious mistake to refuse to understand that or to leap in from a position of ignorance. Only by understanding it can solutions be constructed. Of course you can choose to ignore it should you so wish, but don't expect warring parties to listen to you.

The only instance of Prannet that i know is in Billaricay Dickie by Ian Durie I'd rendez-vous with Janet, quite near the Isle of Thanet She looked more like a gannet, she wasn't half a prannet Her mother tried to ban it, her father helped me plan it And when I captured Janet, she bruised her pomegranate |

[Off topic - there used to be a cordial advert involving fruit making its way to the cordial factory, including a few pomegranates. I made the critical error of questioning why onions were involved. Forevermore whenever pomegranates are mentioned, I get mocked...]

Big_G three days ago: I am not qualified to say really, but my partner is Dutch and keeps on top of things in NL. She tells me there are right wingers making a lot of noise, and getting support, in the coalition there. Not sure how many without Googling, but the coalition is made up of multiple parties (okay, I just googled, and it’s apparently currently 16 parties in the house representatives, with 3 main parties including the right wing, anti Muslim, populist party PVV, according to Wikipedia). So, yeah the Tories paint over a Mickey mouse mural in an asylum centre to make it less welcoming for Children. Anyone got want to support or defend that? |

Jenrick is one of the worst of them. There's no depth he won't descend to in the name of personal advancement.

fd, interesting times in NL. On the face of it, it’s good the smaller parties brought the government down as the policy Rutte was trying to push through seems very bad - a policy designed to stop refugee families from reuniting. I suppose a question now is will the anti-immigration parties gain more ground at the upcoming election, or not? On top of that, the farmers are very annoyed with Rutte and the BBC article says “The Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), which became the biggest party in the upper house of parliament after a shock election win in March, said they will not serve in any future government led by Mr Rutte”. The government were trying to make changes in the farming industry, which is very important in NL, due to environmental/emissions concerns but it’s complicated as my understanding is that previous fairly recent administrations were encouraging farming, and some farmers have invested heavily in their farms, which they feel is now at risk. A BBC article from last July says “Dutch government proposals for tackling nitrogen emissions indicate a radical cut in livestock - they estimate 11,200 farms will have to close and another 17,600 farmers will have to significantly reduce their livestock”. I’m not sure how it’s going to play out. |

Meanwhile in Italy the fascists have opened up another 425,000 visas to non-EU works to help fill their labour shortages: ft.com It's the two faced dishonesty I cannot stand, we need immigration yet we are encouraged to hate immigrants. The Tories haven't even reached the level of being able to admit that we need that immigration to fill spaces in agriculture/care homes. Still burbling on about students and the economically - inactive (hello long covid anyone?). That makes them stupider than the fascists in my books. |
