Ed Miliband does a decent job in his book (Go Big) of explaining how some progress has been made in taking on the fossil fuel industry (Ch18 Follow The Money) and why the industry itself is extremely unlikely to change its ways without external influence. There are reasons for optimism, even if progress is slow. The suffragette movement was highly divisive at the time. I don't think many people object to their cause now! They ended up pursuing violent means as well, although that wasn't how it was presented when I was at school, I wasn't aware they used bombs and arson attacks. Makes throwing jigsaw puzzles and delaying a tennis match for a short time seem rather lame - but they are getting coverage, and I suspect will eventually be hailed as heroes. But for now we're in the passage where most people just do not get it. |

The Scots accepted the legitimacy of Charles 2 long before the English did. In fact they invaded England with him and got their asses roundly whupped for him by anti-monarchists. How fickle. *historical note* |

The people in the neighborhood appeared so ignorant and careless at Worcester that I was provoked and asked "And do Englishmen so soon forget the ground where liberty was fought for? Tell your neighbors and your children that this is holy ground, much holier than that on which your churches stand. All England should come in pilgrimage to this hill, once a year". How times change. |

I get that in 1651 Scotland might have liked Charles II vs. Cromwell, but to be honest, choices didn't include having parliaments with democratically elected representation based on votes for all the people. So was a wee bit different back then?!

That's literally my point... See also Republicans, who used to be the nice guys and Dems who were the bad guys. Roles somewhat reversed now...

Times change indeed. Pretty much by definition according to 2nd law of thermodynamics! I have to say, I put very little store by history. People who hang on to old grudges and allegiances just because some great-great-grandperson was affected it are sad and dangerous, in my view. You have to make choices for the time in which we live, and importantly, with respect to the climate emergency, for the generations to come.

Up to a point. History is important and we are shaped by it, whether we want to accept it or not. |

Incidentally, Just Stop Oil's main ambition (UK govt to stop issuing new licences for oil/gas exploration) is something Labour have committed to should they win power* theguardian.com *This pledge is currently eight U-turns old |

I agree with you HappyG - letting the past dictate how you live your life is nuts. However, I would never trust a Campbell. |
