The Orkney story is a good bit of PR, which has had a lot of coverage, so fair play. But the gripes that are listed in the article can be applied to most of the Scottish islands. Lack of investment in ferries and expensive housing due to second-home buyers. It's a common issue for my in-laws who live on Arran. From a historical perspective, Norway only became an independent state in 1905. So at the time when the islands became formally part of Scotland - 1468 - Norway didn't exist. As a supporter of Scottish independence, if the good people of Orkney have a vote on the issue, it would have to be considered. However, would the Norwegians want to have the islands? Would they need to have a referendum? It's interesting that Orkney voted No in the 2014 referendum. And Norway was told it would be economically worse off if it became independent. A good bit of PR, but as the saying goes 'it's no happenin.''. |

I should also acknowledge that the issues with house price inflation are also a problem for rural and seaside areas across the UK.

Sounds like England has more claim to become part of Denmark. Or possibly France - which did consider union with the UK in the darkest part of WW2, history fans.

“… The final "Declaration of Union" approved by the British War Cabinet stated that France and Great Britain shall no longer be two nations, but one Franco-British Union. The constitution of the Union will provide for joint organs of defence, foreign, financial and economic policies. Every citizen of France will enjoy immediately citizenship of Great Britain, every British subject will become a citizen of France.”

Humberside could happily bugger of to the Netherlands couldn't it? I mean they already have great transport links and just add 'land' to Hull and you're there aren't you? This is only a partial joke. |

Never heard that about Britain and France proposing a Union during WW2. Very interesting. No, the Orkney thing isn't really about seceding, it's just publicity for their concerns (very genuine concerns), as SN says. Good headlines though. Report from the 3 Health think tanks saying the NHS cannot continue to provide service without major investment and/or reform, that it is understaffed, has fewer beds than any major comparable system, has outdated equipment and failing IT. Pretty damning. What to do? G |
