A reminder that now Pincher has been suspended for 8 weeks, two years ago the Tories re-admitted a suspended sex pest (suspended for 12 weeks), who was found guilty of harassment, but avoided a recall petition/by-election on a legal loophole, and is still sitting in Parliament: news.sky.com Absolute disgrace. (as if there wasn't enough of them). |

Parliament's standards watchdog recommends an eight-week suspension for MP Chris Pincher The report says that Pincher is "unable to recall the events in question". Our MPs are princes. Princes! |

"Space Karen basically the same as that submarine prannet" Does anyone know what this sentence means? I've never done Twitter. I see news websites citing twitter sources for quotes from individuals or organisations. Strikes me as a very lazy form of journalism. But I can see how, for instance for academics, and politicians, it is a useful way of publishing views and information. Not a source I consume unless an intermediary organisation picks it up though. There’s no verb there for a start off. I’m counting space as an adjective. Otherwise I’ve no idea what that means at all. |

Oh, that could be it fd. Great detective work - never heard Elon Musk referred to as Space Karen. Nice. The rumour on the 6000 tweet limit was that Musk insisted on pushing a not properly tested release and there was a bug that meant if you looked at one post, it was hitting the API continuously at a rate of 20 times over the usual rate (and Twitter therefore couldn't cope), so he had to roll out the temporary rate limit rather than admit he'd botched it. Love that idea. I'm going to recommend it hear when we fail to properly volume test our systems! G |

I thought it was a denigration of importance of space industries. Then couldn't work out of if Karen was name of the astronaut that is going to be first woman on the moon, and couldn't work out why that was a bad thing. Totally barking up wrong tree. I wonder if some people feel spending money on space exploration is worthwhile when we have climate crisis on the planet and massive spending inequalities etc? My view is the science and engineering is important in its own right and brings its own benefits in trickle down technologies and knowledge for all. But quite hard to justify. G |

I think twitter had a special place in social media as being potentially worthwhile. If you followed the right accounts, the level of discourse was actually world class, you can actually see some of the sharpest minds in the world exchanging ideas. That said, easy to get sucked into the vortex of scrolling through endless tweets of lower worth, and interacting with others was generally a disappointing timesink. But FB, TikTok, IG, Reddit all look like tools of distraction mostly. Hard to argue in their favour, but still useful to understand why people end up spending so long on those apps. Not signing up to Threads here, if they don't meet basic EU privacy standards then that's a red flag for me. Mastodon certainly feels like hard work to get set up, but in some ways a barrier of entry to a social media platform is no bad thing. |

Twitter (and similar) can be a useful way of having a public discussion with interested parties around the world. A bit like fetch forum, but a bit different. It certainly enables (enabled) some useful scientific discussions for me. Though mostly just procrastination really When/if Threads goes open (activitypub compatible) it may be similarly useful. But I’m done with private discussion spaces controlled by sociopathic billionaires. |
