As for political competence and experience, that’s the whole point of having a civil service that actually runs the country. Pols don’t need expertise, it helps if they aren’t actively destructive though. Which is where the tories fall down massively.

Up to a point. I’d argue that it would be highly advantageous to have an ex-military man, say, in the MOD rather than, say, a fireplace salesman like Gavin Williamson. Especially when our govt habitually rotates positions every five minutes. It is less than optimal to have a continuous stream of know-nothing numpties having to make decisions without any real experience. It does take quite some time to get up to speed, and these days many of them are shunted on before they’ve got a plaque on their door, let alone mastered their brief. |

I mean, plenty of civil servants know their ministers are as thick as mince, which must make their lives quite stressful as they spend their days educating them and preventing them from wrecking stuff out of sheer ignorance. I don’t see how good governance is served by a revolving door of tyros who have to be briefed up to their eyeballs for months before they can even be expected to have a handle on the job.

It also arguable that this Tory govt have caused major civil service disruption, some highly experienced senior civil servants have gone and cited ministerial behaviour for their resignations. That damage is lasting, but these ministers simply jog on to their next bin fire.

No it wouldn't Fields. Saying "Jewish people are bad" would, quite rightly, as it is anti-Semitic. Saying that the country of Israel and its soldiers, as directed by its government, are breaking international law and harming civilians is a political statement and is permitted in UK law and regulations, including the Labour party. "The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) holds that the establishment of Israeli settlements violate Fourth Geneva Convention. The ICRC also holds that the displacement of Palestinians that may occur due to the settlements also violates Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention." en.wikipedia.org |

Ardern didn’t really do anything in NZ to resolve the structural issues of poverty and inequality - housing is still screwed over there. The way she chose to resign - can’t imagine a man doing that - suggests she’s probably a decent person with little ego, and always came across as authentic. Future global role for some institution or other as an agent of neoliberalism. Certainly she was decisive rather than dithering over covid but you could also say China was decisive but that wouldn’t necessarily be a compliment. |

Not an assertion - a question so no source needed Do you think it's ok for British working class people to be racist No. and do you measure them by the same standards as the (allegedly) racist EU officials you bemoan? I would expect to hold officials - including unelected EU ones - to a higher standard tbh - as should you! You can probably see where I'm going here.. I wish I had your education, I can’t see where you’re going at all |
