I'm more concerned that on multiple issues, Labour don't believe they can sell a different path.

Exactly, which is my point too.

Also it's not about denying a fiscal black hole but saying there are *other* ways of addressing it than Hunt's budget. Greater taxes for the upper end of society for one, unless you're all gonna come out as Laffer curve devotees (suddenly remembers why I'm usually one of the furthest left of the posters on here).

Chris. That's exactly what they did say. Without being explicit to be tied to it.

And that, for me, is the correct electoral strategy. Hint at general directions without being tied to things until you need to be.

They need to avoid issues where switching voters get turned off this far out from a GE.

The Tories have dug their hole. Now let them wallow in it. Don't help them.

I don't particularly like it, but it's a reasonable strategy in the situation.

I'm not disagreeing, but they have to avoid the Mili-E trap, where they got outflanked by Osborne from the left. They cannot be too timid. Safe, but not too safe, otherwise they end up like the Lib Dems... irrelevant. A good point from the Rise of the Nazis documentary was that at the end of the war, people stuck with them because they could "perceive of no better alternative". It's like Stockholm syndrome.

So in other words, don't scare the horses but offer enough of an alternative that people don't just stick with the devil they know. Labour's poll numbers are impressive, but already Sunak has overtaken them on handling of economy. It's like how the hell did that happen, the Tories torched the economy, and yet they'd still trust Sunak/Hunt above Starmer/Reeves.

Perhaps I've got rose-tinted glasses, but what has been portrayed by Starmer and others at the conference has impressed me. Concentration on the future, green energy. To quote "Make Britain a clean power by 2030 by harnessing the power of marine and tidal energy, quadrupling offshore wind, doubling onshore wind, tripling solar power".

I agree that at the Labour Party conference they presented an impressive left-oriented green agenda, including the proposal for a publicly-own energy company. I am very disappointed that in the past few weeks, Labour spokespeople have not been placing greater emphasis on this when challenged by interviewers with the question: What would Labour differently than the Tories?

However Canute have they been given the chance? Certain presenters on the BBC shutdown any well thought out responses.

The green agenda also polls well with Tories too.
