That's a great article what I take from it is we are more like a feudal society, run for the benefit of a few than any sort of capitalism or democracy.

And the long, often spoken of 'real' reason for Brexit? To avoid scrutiny of the sort of tax evasion that allows hi jacking of a nation.

So yet again, well done quitters, it's only going to get worse.

I was wondering this morning what the next election campaign will be like if Johnson is still in place.
My (probably incorrect) conclusion is that, going into an election with a history of Brexit chaos, economic woes, lies and general malfeasance and corruption will only lead him to conclude he has to give red wall types and his core Tory base lots of red meat as far as the culture wars are concerned:
Loud rhetoric against the EU
A war on woke - whatever that looks like
A referendum on capital punishment
That kind of thing.

I suspect, in short, that he will promise anything and everything, hoping that his base will overlook the destruction he has wrought in their desire to reverse social and cultural changes. He probably won't do half of what he says anyway. It's a tried and tested formula - promise the earth and people will believe it if it's what they want and you say it often enough. It won't be a "platform" : it will just be a grab bag of populist shite intended to grab votes and polarise the country.

Richmac - I don’t think there’s much difference between the UK and Russia / China in terms of the distribution of wealth

We tut / disapprove of Russian oligarchs but the same system operates here too but under a different name

If only there was a politician who tapped into this with a slogan like “for the many, not the few” ;-)

Except that the big business / media connections of his own party did their best and succeeded in sidelining him

Trump and BoJo's game plan where they keep a solid 30-40% or so onboard seems to be a democracy breaking winner unfortunately.

When there are a good 20% that will vote Tory whatever happens, BoJo only has to convince another 20% that either he is better than the other person or the other person is much worse.

If that's the game, culture wars and boosterism could be enough despite the sleaze and not really achieving much in government.

Long term it won't work as the Tory brand will slowly erode, but the Labour brand is pretty weak anyway so here we are.

What have those three countries got in common? That's right, none of them have scrutiny from the EU over taxation and loop holes etc.

Another reason Brexit was a bad idea, makes us more like Russia/China.

Seems a bit of a false equivalence to me - Plenty of EU countries are awash with loopholes on tax. Malta / Ireland / Luxembourg / Cyprus all spring to mind, no doubt can think of more

Gini coeff for income inequality is about 34 for UK and 38 for those two. So, quite different, but the UK could still be more like most of Europe which is closer to 30 on the whole, 25 for the very best.

Oops.
