I really wanted that to be true, but I can't replicate it (it redirects to Colston School or Colston Hall when I search). Not sure if it's been subsequently removed, or maybe Bing maps?

I assumed it was a fake meme spread by people who hadn't bothered checking. Though google maps does depend a lot on crowdsourcing so it's not impossible.

Why just Colston though? What about statues of James II and William of Orange who I think effectively "chaired" the company that Colston was associated with? I've no tolerance for statues of those associated with slavery, and no doubt the local significance of Colston is way above his national significance and therefore was an important focus in Bristol, but it feels like he's being set up as being the national slaver, when it seems from my reading of various bits and bobs that he was a relatively minor figure in the grand scheme of that abhorrent trade.

I think the Colston statue has been the focus of a lot of ill feeling and campaigning for a while due to things like the annual thanksgiving service in his honour which must feel like a bit of a kick in the teeth to many locals.

ONS data show a further 10000 deaths up to the end of may not yet currently reported by DHSC which raises the total to over 50000. Yet still so many facebook posts having a go at protestors etc but ignoring the current data of how abysmal our approach has been to controlling it.

Tangential, but a couple of days ago I was reading about the teaching of Confederate history in the USA, which of course also has a lot of statues in place. And it struck me as an odd, singular even, example of history being written by the losers*. America won't get very far until it deals with that. And whatever we are thinking in our "white liberal bubble" there are a lot of people in the USA, especially southern USA who are still a LOT keener on the Confederacy than equal rights.
* actually, Scotland also has quite a lot of history written by the losers. Speaking of the butcher William of Orange, having the "snowsports capital of Scotland" being named Fort William is a bit like somewhere in the Netherlands still being called Hitlerburg. Though conversely, many Scots still revere him so much they get tattooed with the date of one of his leading slaughters.
