Jono.
its a bit hard to fit in more than 21 hours a week, if your a single mom, or are a carer of a disabled child / elderly relative / partner (BTW I do not receive tax credits)

however I do agree that some people have taken advantage of tax credits - how many of them there are, I don't know - one used to live in our street. He did 16hrs a week as a life guard at the local baths, married with 2 x healthy children. They had there wedding in Tunisia if I remember rightly.

at the moment I believe that the Government's *shaving off* some money from some people who receive some benefits - these are the easy targets.

it has yet to tackle or attempt to tackle the long term unemployed. People who have made a life style choice of generally sitting on their arse and producing children. I don't believe they have a plan for this problem.

when I hear any of them complaining I will let you know, so far life continues as normal.

For a single mom with children at school age it wouldn't be hard as the kids are at school for 30 hours a week. In the other cases I would agree with you.

Ha ha ha - say that on one of the Fetchies with kids threads on here and see what response that gets.

Anyway, I like the Daily Mash's take on it -

Incidentally I do have 2 kids, aged 4 and 7. My wife works 32 hours a week and I work full time. It's not that hard. We don't receive any tax credits but instead opt for the traditional route of earning a living.

Of course it would be completely unreasonable to expect other people to do the same.

Most people do, but not everyone's kids, or lives are the same - you cannot judge everyone by what you yourself do as circumstances can make the same experiences completely different.

Oh yes you can (and should). Dave, Boz, Georgie and their pals do. They have no concept of 30 quid a week, or even 30 quid an hour

Well said SFL. I've heard plenty of anecdotal evidence of people who manage their hours to get maximum benefits.

The whole concept of tax credits is ridiculous. We take away money in tax, then reimburse some of it via a complex system involving lots of govt. employees.
I heard a radio phone in on this subject. One of the callers was working for DWP when the system was introduced. She said she came away from the training, and the predominant thought in her head was "We can't afford this".

Yes - you only need to look at the ONS figures to see that the first 6 decile groups (60% of the population) are net receivers of benefits to realise that the situation is entirely unsustainable. And this ignores the cost of the administration of such a vast scheme of income redistribution. The whole system is insane.

£30 per week loss in income; £30 per hour salary / income / back-handers / whatever
