Agree Spleen. The act of delegating responsibility for your own actions and mistakes to some higher authority is certainly a disease |

I'd say neither. I don't know enough about it. Perhaps a accumulation of lots of choices with less and less conscious control in each case. Resulting in a dependency on a substance that originated purely from choice even though it doesn't feel that way now. |

When you say "teach your kids where food comes from" I assume you mean taking them to Sainsbury's? It's not that big of a deal, dude.

No, take them to a butcher's shop in France. See the cute statuettes of piggies frolicking in the window, next to pigs' ears, heads, tails and various barely identifiable body parts. Whole, skinned rabbits look good too.

Binks, that Daily Mash link was funny. The shift in blame from fat to sugar makes me think of a family member, who was told that to lower cholesterol, fat was the enemy and had to be eliminated from her diet. This she did. She drank flavoured water, and was fond of Mulller type yoghurts as a dessert. "They're OK, they're fat free." I pointed out the high levels of sugar, but she was doing what she was told. Now she has type 2 diabetes. |

Flavoured water *shudder*. I always have a bottle of Tesco's flavoured water in my fridge. I dilute it 5-6 parts water to 1 part flavoured water, otherwise it's far too sugary. And this is stuff that you're supposed to drink as is! In reference to PTB's post: nutritional information, in the form of sugar and salt content in grams per portion, is a good thing and already compulsory. But I don't need a traffic light graph to tell me that Coke and flavoured water is full of sugar - I have a tongue, I can taste it. If you eat nothing but crap you become inured to the taste, but proper food is in the next aisle over and it doesn't take that long for your tongue to learn the difference. |

That's true about nutritional info Spleen, but if people are raised on a high sugar diet, they find low sugar options unpalatable. Eventually you get used to it, but the transition is tricky. Look at breakfast cereals aimed at children - and adults, in fact. telegraph.co.uk Personally, always look at the per 100gm figures. |

But that can also be misleading where it bears no resemblance to a real portion. I think it was Eat Well for Less recently did a display of various drinks ranked by sugar content, firstly per 100ml, then by bottle content (each bottle being the "single serving" size) and the order was completely different. I can also remember (but not where from) reading that Marmite would probably be illegal due to the salt content. It's fine if you're eating the teaspoon that a slice of toast needs, but insane if measured by the 100g. |

I saw that programme Duchess. The other point was that the recommended serving of cereal was far smaller than what the average person actually eats, so the per serving figures are not so useful for those foods. That's what I meant when I said I use the /100gm figures. I agree that a can of drink should be labelled with the sugar content per can, as people drink the whole can. I love Marmite, but my tastebuds tell me it's high in salt, so I spread it thinly. People seem to to cope with much higher concentrations of sugar. Sadly, what's needed is that rarest of commodities, common sense. Let's hear it for Grape Nuts... |
