The graun doesn't carry the lurid detail, but the impression I'm getting is that it was a pretty one sided pursuit of a young person who may have been under the legal age of consent when it started.

Plus, it’s the abuse of power dynamic, 42 year old worldly-wise, successful man and 16 year old boy, even if over the legal age of consent. I’m sure the same condemnation would have applied were the youngster a female (see various grooming trials plus Harvey Weinstein etc).

Can it be grooming if the recipient is over the statutory age of consent? It's a logical corollary of the age of consent that anyone above it can have a lawful relationship with someone else above it (unless certain statutory regulations, such as to do with teachers for example).

If 42:16 is "wrong" when the 42yo is a powerful politician, is it wrong of the 42yo is a part time charity shop worker? Or is it ok if the politician is 32yo and slightly less powerful?

Or if 42:16 is wrong, is 32:16 right? Or 28:16? Or 24:16? Where does "right" magically appear?

Half your age and add 7 :-)

But that's not the law...

There is no hard cut off Larks, which I guess is your point.

But the combination of age difference, amount of influence, role in society and how aggressive the pursuit is all combine and move it along the spectrum from socially uncomfortable to socially unacceptable.

In a sane world, using your unelected dad to talk to the Chinese would also be unacceptable - just to use today's example.

He didn't know how old the lad was when he started texting him. Sounds very off to me.
