stander - occasionally the Tories get it right - I note it took a Tory/lib Dem govt to get the extradition blocked for Gary Mackinnon in 2012 (Theresa May no less), the guy with Asperger's who hacked the military and NASA computers looking for evidence of UFO's, before then Brown's lot were only too happen to comply. Trouble is the liberal/humanist instincts of the early coalition years, were soon destroyed by the waves of polarisation and xenophobia unleashed by the Brexit referendum... I was hoping that Johnson as a "follow which way the wind is blowing" politician might seem fit to rediscover that kind of liberalism (as encouraged by Jack Merrit's dad), but currently he seems incapable of it. As pointed elsewhere across the media, jailing people for longer doesn't mean they are less likely to offend, in fact they are likely to become more radical when they come out. Prison further radicalises people, and unless you jail them all for life, you have to deal with the problem on their release still. |

Err, I think Sweden already allows 2.5 weeks bereavement leave (they call it sickness - but for stress, bereavement etc is all accepted), whether for a death of a child or anyone else (I do have to say, I don't get why this is Parental Leave - are children the only important relatives? ) researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk |

I think I read recently that minimum jail terms for terrorist offences are to be raised from 3 years to 14 and other measures being brought in to better (wrong word possibly?) deal with their release when it comes. The probation service has been a big failure in recent years and is a thing that has been recognised as failing as is hopefully being addressed currently. I have no doubt that Priti Patel will get kiss arse on both these fronts though. Much to the disgust of many libertarians, I suspect. |

"The law will come into force in April, with the UK being the only country to have that right to time off". Cut and pasted from the BBC website reporting this. Go tell 'em off Happy. |

Yeah not failure due to the Tories trying to sell it off and why are offenders released early? Fuck all to to do liberal's the Tories trying to cut costs is the actual answer.

Privatised the probation service didn't work. Simple as that.

My comment re libertarians Rich was referencing future actions to be taken by Priti Patel, not the past ones. I thought you intelligent enough to be able to read that correctly. |

And I've just noticed that I typed "kiss arse" instead of "kick arse" in the post above. Makes for a different read. I really ought to proof read betterer. |

Giving employees time off without disciplinary action to cope with bereavement should be a given in any civilised workplace.
