I think if you read any of Cummings blogs in recent years, he regards Whitehall & the civil service as utterly dysfunctional and wants big change - see e.g.

Cerre - yup, when I started at DfE, he was one of the SpAds here. I have a bad feeling about this...

I think there is such a thing as the Overton Window, which represents the "acceptable limits" of public discourse. One you start stepping out of it you start to look like unhinged radicals and I don't think the British public is inclined to trust radicals.
But the numbers seem to show that it was Brexit and Corbyn that sank Labour. People just didn't like him. Even his own parliamentary party didn't like him and voted overwhelmingly to get rid of him. They saw what was coming and they were right.

And when Momentum/Corbyn types go on about a radical agenda, they are almost by definition putting themselves outside of the Overton window right away.

Was that Corbyn's unconscious influence - happier being 'right' and demonstrating from the sidelines rather than having the party in power where they can at least deliver some portion of what they believe in and keep the other lot at bay?

Simbil - I think there's definitely something in Corbyn's demeanour that always seemed happier with the purity of opposition.

However, as Fozzy has said elsewhere, the problem with the manifesto was mostly a) if was too long and rambling and b) the people delivering it. (Also the support acts - with Thornberry and Starmer sidelined in favour of embarrassments like Burgon, Lavery and bloody Gardiner, McDonnell was the only one on TV who could string a sentence together).

Noises being made by present & past figures in Scottish Labour of the possibility of backing Indyref2.

The penny might be dropping that that’s their only chance of not going the same way as the Yangste river dolphin.

JB, simbil, Dooogs - absolutely! Basically, we have the Loony Right trying to take over the country, and what needs to happen is for their lunacy to be exposed by a sensible, pragmatic, presentable party which gains credibility by contrast. Instead we have a 'radical agenda' from a Labour Party led by people who haven't a clue how to present themselves to the general public (in fact, seem to think the general public isn't good enough for them), which allows Cummings et al to shine the torch on them as if they are the loonies. Job done - people are no longer looking at and questioning the monstrous idiocy of a Conservative government, with no plans for what to do once they've finalised the greatest act of self-harm this country has had since God knows when.
