I agree HappyG, I think the tories would be wrong to not allow another independence ref, and it would not go down well. It is for the people of Scotland to decide. And I agree on the %bar as well. I can report that shanksi has received his postal vote stuff. Several pieces of paper are involved but I think he can work it out š |

8/13 for the Scottish Tories would be vomit inducing.

Merry Christmas & Happy New G(rrr)
I don't see why Tories shouldn't hold or increase in Scotland any less than they might do across rest of UK. It was brilliant in 15 when they went down to none (or was it 1?) but it was vomit inducing when they went back up to 13 in 2017. If the whole country has gone mad and elects a Tory government with a majority, why shouldn't Scotland be part of the madness? It doesn't make any difference anyway. If Scotland was 80% Labour + Lib Dem as it was in 70s and 80s (I need to check my numbers!) but UK government is Tory, what difference does it make that Scotland is completely at odds with the resulting UK government. "It's a democracy" they cry. Just got to take what other areas of UK voted for. Suck it up. |

FPTP does somewhat exaggerate the differences between Scotland and elsewhere. The Conservative vote in 2017 was 29% in Scotland and 33% in London, for example.

jda: The 40% rule applied in the 1979 Scottish Devolution referendum. There was a narrow majority of votes cast in favour of devolution, but the "yes" vote only represented 32.9% of the registered electorate, so devolution was not enacted at that time. There was no such stipulation in place for the 1997 referendum. It was seen at the time as pretty much a rigged game. Subsequently, the SNP withdrew support for the minority Labour government, the Conservatives tabled a vote of no confidence ... and I reckon people here will be aware of how things subsequently went. en.m.wikipedia.org In the subsequent election, the SNP vote fell from over 30% to 17% and nine of eleven parliamentary seats were lost. (Under a fully proportional system, 17% would equate to twelve seats.) |

A handy graph of Scottish general election results by popular vote here, G: upload.wikimedia.org In five general elections, from 1997 to 2015, the Tory vote never rose above 17.5% in Scotland. However, throughout the 70s and 80s, it never dipped below 24%. |

It would be vomit inducing for me, because of in work poverty, food banks, zero hour contracts, homelessness & benefit payments being assessed for folk dying with cancer or other severe debilitating conditions & all other things associated with austerity, folk are still willing to vote for Johnson and his self serving loathsome cabal. Iām going to Glasgow shortly and the amount of folk begging on the street is heart breaking. I thought we were better than that. |

Another Scottish independence supporter here agreeing with 60/40 but based on the number of votes cast rather than on population.

Any chance of redrawing the border at, say, the Trent? I for one would welcome our new Greater Caledonian overlords...
