+1 for that Chris. Though I probably won't have the courage of my convictions to actually leave UK (son with a grandson and wife with horses and other immovable pets!) Scotland to leave the UK though...?! G |

Jolyon Maugham on why a general election wouldn't be necessary: prospectmagazine.co.uk A unity govt fixing national ills and taking the heat out of the debate. I don't believe it's something that will happen, but it's a nice idea. |

Happy, if scotland leave the uk, can you have a word and annex northumberland into that as well. (I mean, technically I'm north of hadrian's wall so that has to count for something) Thanks in advance.

Of course a general election is necessary. We have bunch of MP's - the majority of which - are using any means possible to prevent Brexit. Let's have a GE and let's get a bunch of MP's in that actually represent current feeling of the population. And with 21 ex-tory remainers presumably being replaced with leavers, parliament can then get on with the job it was asked to do by the referendum - i.e. actually bloody leave. Ideally with a deal (without any locking us in backstop shenanigans), but I will happily take a no-deal exit. |

Bob!
It's the ERG that prevented leaving with a deal though Stander. The majority of MP's are attempting to stop leaving woth no deal. |

But you'd be quite happy Stander if a GE ended up with those Remainer Tories who were deselected (by the way, they weren't all Remain leaning, most of them voted for May's WA actually) with either some other Remainer Tories, or very Remainer Lib Dems or Probably But Who Knows Remainer Labour and we ended up with a Parliament that was mostly Remain and we had a 2nd Ref and the country voted 51/49 to Remain and we revoke A50, yeah? x G

There are supposed to be intelligent people in here. when will they realise that May's deal isn't leaving? The backstop that kicks in if no trade deal is finalised within the transition period can only be exited by agreement of both parties. So the potential to get locked into it and be held there indefinitely, held ransom by gripes from individual countries is not something the ERG (and most sane people) cannot accept. Not giving Gibraltar back to Spain? They then veto and exit from the backstop. Now add in 26 other countries all after their own special interest / gripe / demand. The ERG haven't stopped us leaving. They are ensuring that we actually do. |

And ignore the double negative. I changed wording part way through writing that and didn't adjust that bit. But hopefully the intelligent amongst you will realise what I was supposed to say. I'll leave the stupid to descend into grammatically nit picking in lieu of replying with any sensible response. |
