Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Hello people!!

I have been struggling with lower hamstring tendinitis for the last 3 years, that have reduced me to only being able to run
* about 50% of what I used to be able to do in yearly volume,

* lost most of all the speed I had (from being able to run 2.40 marathon to barely able to run 3.45)
* can't do much cycling (adding it to my training becomes to much)

So I am just wondering if anyone can recommend me a good physio in the London area, that specialises on older ( yes I am going to be 50 next year!!) and that could help me get back to a level that I am more used to?

I am refusing to accept that suddenly I am not able to do even 50% of what I use to do 3 years ago!!

And yes I have seen countless physios, so trying a last throw of the dice to see if someone can help?
Basically I am looking for a physio/sports doctor that specialises in older runners of a good standard?

Commiserations, Contro, that sounds miserable :( I assume you've got a definitive diagnosis and it's definitely a physio that you need?

Are you far from Twickenham Contro? Arran Nicholson is head therapist now at Move Physio and is good. Runner himself and has worked in pro sport, I used to see him when he worked in Maidenhead. He's good (and I have also seen countless physios!)

Thanks all for the sympathy!

Velociraptor that is the thing, is that I don't really have a diagnostic, so I don't really know what the root cause is! Age? (not covid, as it all started well before I had my first covid infection), so I don't know why I am getting these issues.
My hamstring have always been my weakest point though.

Gymfreak I am not far from twickenham att all so I might get in touch with Arran! Thanks for the recommendation.

Happy to get more recommendations or advice !

Good luck contro.

I'm older than you and have never been as good as you but I'd say age is unlikely to be an insurmountable problem. Much more likely thst specific strength and movement work will alleviate the cause and let you build back up again. Plenty of MV50 in our club going 2.55, 2.50, even 2.45.

Best wishes, :-) G

Contro, given how long you've been struggling with this I wonder whether it might be worth getting some imaging of the area. A good physio should be able to advise on whether ultrasound or MRI will give the most useful information in conjunction with a comprehensive history of the course of your symptoms.

Velociraptor I have had a couple of ultra sounds on my lower tendons and one showed some really minor build up of tissue but nothing alarming.
The doc recommended some shockwave therapy that seems to have worked (took a few months??) or it is just that I have reduced enough my volume + intensity for that specific tendon to not be over stressed ...
But I think your suggestion makes sense re having more tests done as it is not going away and I am getting still injuries that are not allowing me to sustain a reduced level of mileage!

My usual suggestion is Back on Track backontrackphysio.wordpress.com but they are SE London so not very convenient for you (though only a short train ride from Charing Cross). They do a lot of work with Kent AC, which has excellent runners of all ages.
