Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The current fires look quite a way from Hathersage area - where I'm staying. It's my first time there (other than a long weekend in Feb in the southern part), so likely to be doing the main tourist walks - Stanage Edge, Kinder, Mam Tor etc. But there looks to be some interesting walks around the reservoir - both round Howden & also Lost Lad/Derwent Edge.
Daughter is in training for 100km South Downs way trek - so short walks to pubs may not be an option.

Fellrunning - is the shuttle bus still running? Other than 2010 / 2102 timetables I can't see anything for 2018, and a few sites that say it closed last year. Not too vital, because if not, I guess we just get a section of road to walk.

And - almost as important - any recommendations for pubs/restaurants/takeaways in Hathersage area?

Thanks all !

um Peak Park access information peakdistrict.gov.uk makes no mention of a shuttle bus anymore but it does confirm what I've always found in previous years which is that the access restriction only applies at weekends and during the week you should (unless they have put additional temporary restrictions in place) be able to drive up to the Kings Tree.

If you fancy an Indian in Hathersage then the Maazi (next to Alpkit) is good. Pub food wise the Little John (just off the Main Street on the road to Bakewell/Calver/Eyam) has always been good and very ample, though I've not been in for a while. Pubs wise the Scotsman (just past the school up School Lane, the last left as you head up the main road in a Sheffield direction) is also good. Slightly out of the village (less than a mile) there is also the Millstone on the Sheffield Road and the Plough on the Bakewell road (B6001) both decent pubs. Cafe wise my favourite is the one at Outside in the main street but the Deli next door to Alpkit/Maazi on the main street is also good.

And the other place you can find a herd of Red Deer near Hatthersage is on the Eastern Moors. Park at the NT site at Longshaw (2-3 miles east of Hathersage) and then take a walk south across the A625 and down White Edge. There is a herd that inhabits Big Moor to the east of the edge and the area between White Edge and Curbar Edge to the West. You can make a nice loop of it by returning north along Curbar Edge.

Yes you can drive down to the Kings Tree during the week. You just can't park (legally). It's a clearway all along the lakeside road. You can only park in the off road car parks. Some are pay and display (Fairholmes and Hagg side) Others are non charging but it means a longer walk. There are moves to make it all chargeable - I'm not sure when (or it may already have happened - I have a residents permit so I wouldn't have noticed).

The bus is the 222. I'm sure I've seen it recently - but I could be wrong. Again I never use it so I'd probably not notice.

I'd agree with Flying Finn about the Little John (Incidentally his alleged grave is in Hathersage churchyard). There's a decent chippy near the lido. Grindleford has a good café near the station.

Further afield the Eyre Arms at Hassop is about the best eating pub in the area. Worth a visit, but ring ahead. The lamb shank and venison pie are to die for. I'll leave you to work out why :)

I'd avoid anywhere in Baslow. Its too close to Chatsworth and they charge accordingly.

Another route you might like to try is the Edale Skyline. The route of the fell race that takes place every March. You'll find it on the Dark Peak website. Its about 23 miles. On a decent day the views are fabulous.

Oh yes - bring some insect repellent. The midges wear knuckle dusters round here.

There are some obvious pull ins near the end of the road where I've never had any grief for parking but I do tend to go up there 'Out of season'.

2 very different days - yesterday did a loop from Castelton - Cave Dale, Mam Tor along to Lose Hill and back down - all very busy and packed.
Today, we walked up the Derwent from the Hathersage Cottage to Shatton then up to Win Hill and other than the stepping stones and the dam section, it was completely deserted. Nice when you get hill tops to yourself (except for a very friendly pigeon - obviously disappointed when we didn't stop for snacks).
Good luck with the sheep shearing Fellrunning - the owners/farmers here said they were shattered. 180 sheep done, 2 shearers & they were struggling to keep up. Lambs & sheep re-united (lambs not done) and moved back 'up' to their normal fields.
