Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Mr jambomo and I walked Dovedale to Milldale last weekend. I love Derbyshire, one of my favourite places, especially Bakewell. We'll be back down soon to see Castleton and Hathersage areas properly.

We did that on the Saturday - from about 12 til 4 (lots of stops for the boys to explore caves). Were you on at the same time? :-)

Will be near Derby (Breadsall) for a long weekend coming up (house moving for my middle daughter) - and looking for any recommendations for must do runs or walks in the area. Supposedly a trial for a possible full holiday later (as a change from SWCP and Lake District).

Any recommendations? (runs typically 6 -12 miles, walks up to 15/20 miles*)
Or other visitor / must do places?

Thanks for any suggestions
Oh - and can whoever runs this thread, please organise bright sunshine? Rather than atmospheric downpours or sleet?

* the longer the walk, the greater the need to finish at a pub :-)

Dovedale-Milldale (3 miles each way) is lovely, straightforward, but was fairly busy on both occasions we've done it.

We've done a small part of the Monsal trail, and perhaps it was the bit that we did, but it was a bit samey.

Walking up Mam Tor (and all the paths around it) is also fun, and very windy at the top.

You are also close to the Nomad route (see thenomadultra.com ).

For extreme local knowledge, you'd do well to drop chrisity an fmail - he knows pretty much everywhere round here.

Derby Tup
I was born in Derby and spent my first forty years in the county

Derwent Edge above Ladybower is great. Stanton Moor fantastic for a short outing. Edale - Jacobs Ladder - Southern edge of Kinder a rugged ‘get to know the Dark Peak’ outing

For a White Peak 8-12 miler you’ll struggle to beat starting in Monyash doing Lathkill Dale passing through Youlgreave and heading back on the Limestone Way

A wander round the Chatsworth estate is great

Bugger, I’m getting homesick now ;)

Thanks again - one learning is a hotel in Derby, daughter in SE Nottingham makes a long round trip to the Peak District ! And they seem to like speed camera of all sorts all round Nottingham.
We did Dovedale to Milldale on Thursday after driving up, daughter's house move (the reason for the trip) on Friday, followed by Sherwood Forest.
Saturday we chose the Monsal Trail from Bakewell. Very good, but possibly better to run or cycle than walk? Diverted to the pub at Monsal Head & opted for the last bus back to Bakewell on the return.
Does anyone know why the tunnels were so big? My experience of train tunnels was size of train plus a few inches - not the massive caverns here.
Finished on Sunday with a short run from the hotel and then the Attenborough Bird Reserve in Nottingham, before driving home.
So 2 out of 4 days in the Peaks - may have to get a cottage later in the year.

Just a sample - lots more taken!

Another location question - if I can ...
I'm looking at a house/cottage for a week in June - are there any significant pros & cons to selecting Bradwell, Tideswell or Shatton ? Or other places I should target? (these places are where the reduced cottages are, filtering on 'within 5 miles of Castleton').
Ideal would be able to walk from the door for some of the days & walking distance to a pub with food, or takeways for dinners. And peace & quiet - no noisy raves, pubs with music etc in the area.

Thanks!
